Duke Class of 2022 Discussion Thread

That’s interesting. I thought it had to relate to sexual/gender identity, but I guess the prompt is more broad. Or was that your answer for the second Duke prompt, which asks for a perspective or experience you had?

I am pretty sure the third one is about sexual/ gender identity because the prompt explicitly says if you need more space to explain either of these-- I think steelers4 is talking about the 2nd one which is also optional

“iamconfusion” is right. Sorry, I misunderstood, I was referring to the second one. I did not fill the third one out.

more people got deferred than accepted which is terrifying

Thanks for the clarity @iamconfusionlol . Could anyone else comment if they answered the third question on sexual/gender identity, and if they were accepted, deferred, or rejected? Just trying to see if there’s a correlation (ie: does Duke want to you to answer) or if it truly is optional.

Thanks everyone!

How long does it take after you apply to receive access to the portal? Thanks in advance!

@UndercoverPlum I was accepted and didn’t answer the third question. I did, however, answer the 2nd question

@UndercoverPlum I think that question is truly optional, as if you aren’t in any unique situation (anything other than straight male/female), there’s not really anything that you could answer for this prompt.

I didn’t answer the gender/sexual identity question and was accepted. I honestly had nothing to say (straight, female), and the website emphasizes that the optional essays truly are optional. That being said, I did answer the diversity/community essay. I think there are a lot of things that can be discussed under that prompt, so I would recommend answering it. Good luck!!!

Thanks y’all. I see what you mean, so I’ll definitely answer the second prompt, but since the third doesn’t really apply to me, I think I won’t answer it.

Thanks!

I answered it and I’m a straight male. And I got in. I talked about an experience I had with a girl in my class who began to identify with a gender-neautral name and how this was only possible because of the diversity that the IB program at my school promotes. I feel like the admissions staffed appreciated the fact that I took a leap and answered the question even tho I’m a straight male. Idk.

I got deferred. Does anyone know if there’s anything I can do to help my chances when they consider me again? Or do I leave it up to fate?

@plsletmein22 you should write a letter of continued interest to the Duke rep for your county.

I wrote the diversity/community essay about stage managing for an all girls circus show and being raised around strong women and I didn’t write the gender/sexuality essay because I didn’t feel like I could write a compelling email about it. Oh and I got accepted!

@PBern123 Okay, thanks so much! Would I craft the letter similar to how I wrote my supplemental essay answering the “why does Duke attract you?” question or would it be different?

has anyone else accepted ED gotten their physical acceptance package in the mail yet? i have not

I have not either

@plsletmein22 the letter of interest should kind of be a more detailed " why Duke". You want to let them know that Duke is still your number 1 choice and if admitted you will apply.

does it really help tho

turned in my app two nights ago very excited to see how this all works out! Happy holidays everyone and if you are still grinding on your last apps you got this!!
