I am in a huge dilemma! I just returned from visiting both schools and love both of them; they each have their positives and their negatives:

GT-great city, awesome resources for part-time jobs, old traditions, lots of history

Duke-amazing campus, everyone is soo friendly and happy, felt at home when i visited, great weather, great facilities

About me: i'm interested in sciences, specifically physics, and I'm thinking about pre-med. Also, I'm into music and community service. I'm from a large public school in NY. Oh, and I can see myself at both schools! Negatives: GT-campus lacking in facilities, too compact for me; Duke-very rural, party-hardy

My view may be somewhat biased.. but if you want to go pre-med, I would definitely say Duke over Georgetown!

Duke has one of the top medical schools in the country and is well-known for its top-notch science departments. Georgetown is pretty good too, but I think G-town is more well known for politics and economics.

Also Duke isn't rural at all.. it's right by Durham.. but yes, Duke is party-hardy!!

From what I've heard and seen, Duke has a lot of resources. They say that if you try hard enough you can always score an internship or a chance to do research. I guess you can add that to Duke's pros as well.

dude,...Duke of course. They have shown how well organized and interested on their prospective students they really are. I think this is what one can expect as an undergrad there. Medical sciences, research access is top notch at Duke. G-town is excellent for politics and humanities. I have also found G-town to be very sloppy in their admissions process this year which could just be a reflection of how the school is running. Somewaht disappointening...

I think most of your negative views about Duke come from the fact that you go to school in the northeast, and therefore, subconsciously, anything in the south automatically gets a negative stigma attached to it.

My college counseler is allergic to alcohol. She swears by Duke. There is a vibrant arts community on campus, and Chapel Hill is a very nice, ecclectic arts community. It isn't Washington DC, but, in terms of on campus stuff, Duke has more arts than Georgetown.

By contrast, Georgetown has a student faculty ratio of 12:1 compared to 6 or 7:1 at Duke. Georgetown is cramped. It has a smaller endowment, fewer research opportunities, far less well known science programs and a lower med school acceptance rate.

Just look at US News...Duke is normally 20 places above Gtown (5 vs. 25...though Duke fell to 8 last year.) That means, in general, Duke's programs are going to be better than Georgetown's programs. For students interested in politics, especially international relations, I'd reccommend that they choose Georgetown over just about everywhere, but for everyone else, especially science oriented students, I just don't see how you could pass up Duke.
