Dumb Question-Anyone gotten lucky and gotten an 800 on CR?

i kno it's a dumb question, but it could give me hope. I'm getting low 700s...but want an 800.

Usually when you get to the mid 700's it's just a matter of getting a favorable test and then you can get that 800.

My D got an 800. All I can tell you is that she's loved reading all of her life

Yeah, I got an 800 but it didn't come as a surprise to me. I read a lot, so I guess that's the trick.

I went from 710 to 800 and I'm convinced this helped me:

http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/books/newsat/chapter10.rhtml

Or I just paid more attention when reading it. W/e

I'm pretty sure my 800 came because of 10% luck =p There were at least 2 questions that I couldn't choose between 2 of the answer choices.

Yep, its all about getting a favorable test. You rarely see people repeat 800s in any section.

Yeah, I got lucky. Most people with 800s got lucky...if you're up there at 790 or 780, it means you missed 1-2 questions on your test, which on some test days can get you an 800. It worked for me. I missed 1 and got an 800.

College board CR questions are poorly worded anyway...a smart person (someone capable of missing zero) would miss one just because college board messed up.

Me too! I took practice tests and I mostly got low-mid 700s, but I got an 800 on the test.

Good luck!

One of my sons got 800s for the CR both times he took the SAT; the other got a 780 the first time and an 800 the second.

Neither of them memorized vocab lists or anything. They've simply been the "avid reader" types since they were small--I think that does more for your CR than anything else.

Put me in the "avid reader, didn't prep" camp. I got an 800 on Verbal three times- it was the math I had to work on. Reading a lot (and a variety) is the best thing you can do.

i got an 800. i read a lot; i didn't prep.

I read a lot, didn't really prep, beyond taking the PSAT and reading some SAT questions of the day.

Out of 67 questions:
First time:3 wrong, 0 omitted. (score 770)
Second time: 1 wrong, 1 omitted. (score 800)

As you can see, when you're that close, it comes down to luck and a good curve.

I got an 800 too...same number of answers wrong just different curve on that test than first time...

really funny thing about luck.

9th grade psat writing: 80
10th grade psat writing: 60
11th gradepsat writing: 63
No lie.

well, i didnt get an 800.....got a 750.

I got an 800, and I'm pretty sure it was mostly luck. I'm not a big reader of the type of literature usually used on the SAT, and while I've always scored well above 700 on these standardized english tests, the perfect score was a matter of a couple lucky guesses. For prep, I memorized the 250 most common/difficult SAT words, as listed in some book by some company. This was unbelievably helpful, because in at least five or six questions knowledge of those words was directly tested.

I read a lot, but I got 69 (soph) and 67 (jun) on my PSAT. I got 800. I didn't memorize vocab or anything, just took some practice tests. I think I was just very very careful on the real test and I didn't make any dumb mistakes. I don't think it was luck, since I didn't omit any and I was fairly certain of most of my answers. There might've been a bit of luck with vocab- I don't know every word out there, but I knew all of them that day.

I think it has something to do with having something like subscriptions to lets say 20 to 30 plus (intelligent) magazines coming into a household some every week and many once a month - i.e lots of reading

I never got an 800 on any practice tests but I did when it counted! I usually got low to mid 700s. Really it kind of depends on what test you get but I think your also just more likely to concentrate mroe when you know the test counts.

Mathson reads (and rereads) about 100 sci fi and fantasy books a year. He also reads a bunch of internet forums. He used to read PC Mag and PC World. He occassionally reads a computer or math related book. He didn't study and got an 800.
