DUS vs. Smeal

I was accepted to DUS fall. I am pretty interested in becoming a business major. I talked to admissions and they said i could do smeal for summer. I NEED to work this summer so that would be tough. What is it like going from DUS to Smeal? Am i limited form anything? What are the advantages of starting off in smeal? Thanks!!

I’m also in DUS trying to get into Smeal. If you got into Smeal right away you’re good. If not you have to jump through hoops because every major in the Business college is under administrative enrollment controls which means that since Business is so popular they only let in the top performers into the college.

To just be eligible for Smeal you need a 3.2 CGPA at the end of your Freshmen year. After that you need to complete the required classes with at least a C (ACCTG 211, ECON 102, ENGL 015, FIN 301, MATH 110 or MATH 140, MGMT 301, SCM 200 or STAT 200) before your Junior year. The last thing is before your Junior year you will be put into a selection pool. For some of the majors if you have a CGPA of 3.0 you are guaranteed a spot, but for the most popular majors like Finance a CGPA of 3.5 is a required to automatically get a spot in the major.

If you didn’t receive the required CGPA before the selection pool, after all of the spots are given to the people who made the cut, it goes to whoever had the highest CGPA after that.

I was interested in this too and spoke to a DUS advisor about it recently. She said that about half of the Smeal majors transfer in from DUS. If you plan your courses wisely, you should be able to declare a Smeal major from DUS. The courses required for entrance to major are the same for DUS as for Smeal.

It does seem like GPA requirement is a little higher for DUS than for Smeal. However, there are still GPA requirements if you start in Smeal. You can find those by googling the words “smeal entrance to major requirements.”

In sum, if you plan correctly and get good grades, you should have no problem. So I don’t think you have to give up your summer job.

Beware: there’s lots of bureaucracy at Penn State, it’s run like a corporation rather than an institution of higher learning (especially Smeal).
I am a current PSU student. I came to PSU as an engineering student, decided it wasn’t for me and wanted to switch to business (something I’ve shown interest in prior to coming to PSU). However, courses in engineering are substantially more difficult than any in business and I did not have a satisfactory GPA to transfer into Smeal. Since they only evaluate your first year GPA and nothing else (no context) I was unable to change colleges even though I now have a GPA over a 3.3 in business. There is absolutely no way around this and I couldn’t even apply to be considered. I tried to talk to the assistant dean, Gus Colangelo, however it took him over a month to reply to my emails and when he did all he did was get angry with me and say rules are rules. So now if I want to study business, I’m basically being forced to transfer to another university, which I intend to do.

Also, class sizes are an issue here. I haven’t had one business class (at UP) with less than 150 students, the majority are over 200-300 students.
