e-mail regarding supplemental application

thesmiths: judging from your past posts on other forums, I'm guessing you got that email bc your scores are relatively weak by OOS standards for the UCs-they're barely avg. for in-state, and OOS scores are normally well into the 2150+ area. So definitely take this as an opportunity to explain why you want to go to UCLA, and more importantly, why you deserve to get in. You have a unique story that the admissions office would be honored to hear about. good luck!

jmarin: I'm guessing (just from other posts of yours that I remember) that the school was probably a bit confused on how you could be ranked #1 in your class and still have failing grades, Cs, etc. That probably does not look good at all, and is definitely sending a "massive grade inflation" signal through the application. Either your school is not at all competitive, or your hs has some crazy ranking system. UCLA/UCB simply want to know more about it. So yes, your stats are the reasoning behind it. They don't just send them out if you're borderline on essays, it's like 90% statistics; you have stuff going for you, but one major red flag.

yeah it is true, but i dont find it relevant why people want to know our stats. We obviously know what kind of people are getting these. So there really is no point to say our stats.

I was simply answering your question. If you don't want to know, don't ask. Besides, you post your stats on other forums; they're nothing to be ashamed about, good by the vast majority of standards, you're just in a unique situation while applying to one of the best schools in the country. I wish you the best of luck though, wherever you end up.

I also got this email on Friday. I was wondering what they are looking for in the essay questions. Does it have to be "catchy" like the initial college essays or do they want something straight forward?

I'd like to see if my stats are above or below those of the people getting this, so I can better judge my chances.
