Congrats to those of you who were accepted. I agree, Snowdog… it’s disappointing. Deferred here with 30 ACT, 3.7 GPA, 6 APs (4s/5s so far). I don’t get it.

D1 is accepted! 670v, 630m, 740wr, 3.9uw gpa
6 APs, 5th in class of 275

Best of luck to all!

Dwhite UGA gpa is calculated by using language arts, math, science, social studies and foreign language classes and also AP electives like music theory and psychology.
Then they calculate by 90-100 A 80-89 B etc…

DD accepted! So excited…OOS, 34 ACT, 6 AP’s (3 this year), Salutatorian of class of
almost 400. 4.83GPA, 4.00 unweighted…almost 500 community service hours, lots of extracurriculars!

HopefulDawg that is not the way UGA calculates GPA. If 92 at your school is a B, that 92 is a 3.0 to UGA. If 90 at your school is an A, that 90 is a 4.0 to UGA. The admissions gods say they can sort all this out but it is hard to see how…they were still importing data 10 days ago.

Dwhite: on the UGA app you have to recalculate your GPA according to UGA guidelines (see preceding paragraph). Big problems for you if your school does not place 9th and 10th graders in AP and/or weight honors classes individually instead of at the gpa level.

Chronome: you know and I know that deferral is not rejection, but it sure feels that way to the applicant. I won’t go into the ECs as that is supposed to have nothing to do with EA, but my child’s ECs are amazing - quality not quantity. Ugh, not a good night.

No need to bring others down…

Having gone through this process with my DS 3 years ago, I know the feeling of anger and hurt when deferrals, waitlists, and rejections come. But, then hopefully an acceptance or 2 trickles in and that anger wanes…a bit. I try to believe that you can’t take this personally…they did not meet your incredible child, they just judged a piece of paper and in the case of deferrals, this is the time to really make sure you submit items that make your child shine like the gem that they are. Right now they are missing out on your great kid and you don’t want them to miss out again…so submit a great essay and letter of recommendation, some updates on what has been going on and hopefully it will all work out the way you hope it does. Snowdog, I do know your pain from the past. Allow the hurt for today and tomorrow concentrate on your child’s incredible future!

DD checked her status - she is in. UGA is her OOS match and a backup in case she does not get our state flagship.

SAT 2210, ACT 30. GPA 3.8 UW / 5.4 W on scale of 5. Her HS has many classes with 6 GPA points. 5 AP scores of total 6 classes

My DD just let me know a little while ago that she was accepted EA to UGA. We’re in state. I didn’t recalculate her GPA according to UGA guidelines but currently it’s around 3.78/4.0, ACT is a 31 with a writing score of 9. She attends a pretty rigorous private school that has a history of acceptance rates of around 1/2 to 2/3 of all applicants that usually apply to UGA according to our Naviance data. All but one of her courses are AP this year.

All of the kids deferred from our school last year ended up getting in; one even received a small scholarship. Start working on those essays now. I haven’t heard my son differentiate other students at UGA in terms of who was accepted when- in the end, in is in. Good Luck.

Thanks for the good words and congrats to those of you who were admitted yesterday.

The essays are already done and submitted to other schools, they are killer. But I’m not sure an acceptance in the spring would change the negative feeling. UGA lost its first choice position in my child’s mind last night. Not rational perhaps but people’s feelings are what they are…if they don’t want me then I don’t want them.

Just curious…how many posting will plan to attend UGA if admitted to other schools on their list?

Snowdog - As a parent, I feel your pain. There is a chance some of the anger will subside with time. I remember friend’s kids (3 yrs ago when S1 was going through this process) that were not admitted to the fall semester of our state flagship and instead admitted to the spring semester - they were furious and insisted they would NEVER attend. Quite a few of those kids are now happy there and thrilled with their “change of heart”. Good luck!

To answer your question - if my son is denied at this ED school I think UGA will be one of his top choices

If any one of my (8) other schools accepts me in March UGA is out of the running. Nevertheless I am eternally grateful.

Son was accepted. 32 ACT 4.00 unweighted/4.63 unweighted. 6 AP Classes this year- total of 11. National Merit Semifinalist. All other classes honors. Several years ago when my daughter was looking at schools we were told by admissions they had denied a student with a perfect 1600 because he had a 3.0 in only regular classes. Rigor does make the difference.
He was also accepted to Georgia Tech.

I think Georgia Tech is a more difficult admit than UGA - so congrats on that georgiamom12.

Unfortunately at our school (considered the best school in the state fwiw), AP is not offered until junior year, and last year one of the two AP courses was deleted and the other postponed…so no opportunity to take AP until senior year. All honors until then but it’s frustrating; no weighting for honors. My kid is asking me why we moved out of Philadelphia to this backwater - though there are several Ivy admits every year.

Sorry if this is a tad too late, but I got EA last Friday.
SAT: 2070 (1390 CR+M)
Rank: 17/230
APs: 11 taken, National Merit Scholar with Distinction

I plan to attend if I don’t admittance into the other four schools I’m applying to–three of which are long shots, so we’ll see.

Checked status on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 central time - accepted.
GPA: 4.1, APs: 6, Honors: 6, SAT: 2000. AP Scholar, 4 years baseball, 3 years newspaper (1 year editor), 1 year basketball, 2 years football (ended due to injury), several community service projects with approx. 200 hours in.

Snowdog -
schools always look at what is available for your student to take at their school. They want to see that the applicant is taking the most rigorous course load AVAILABLE - if it’s not, then you are not penalized by your school’s lack of opportunity.

jrhdjh: I know it’s the most rigorous available, and that’s why I’m frustrated. My child has taken the most rigorous courseload (which includes 5 AP classes senior year and all honors until then, because that is what was available). Also a 2000+ SAT. As mentioned I won’t go into the ECs as supposedly they are not part of EA, but they are outstanding.

I really think the fact that some schools not only offer AP 9th grade but give 6 points for an AP class really creates an uneven playing field. Even with the most rigorous courseload, with essentially no weighting, there is no way to compete with kids who have weighted GPAs approaching and above 5.0.

Thanks again for the input. And congrats again to those who are in. We’ll see what the spring brings.
