For those of you who like "state of the art" facilities, you would love UConn. I'd say more than half of the campus buildings are brand new, and there are some really nice dorm halls (South, Charter Oak, Hilltop, Northwest)

Some dorms are nice, others aren't. Some dining halls are good, others aren't. Just like any school. If anyone has any questions ask away, I am a freshmen at UCONN now and just finished my first semester. I can answer most if not all of the questions you ask.

Thanks bigndude. How did you like your first semester? How did the large lectures go? Do you use the writing lab, tutors, and if so how helpful were those services? Thanks.

I really liked my first semester, but it was a ton of work. The professors really want you to do your best so all of them push really hard. Thats why UCONN is going up in rankings. I had a big work load since I am a Biomedical Engineering Major but it still managable.

The large lecture classes were just thats, large lecture classes. If you wanted help you just had to ask the professors and they would do anything in their power to help you, but you had to ask. I assume its like this everywhere though.

As far as the writing lab I really had little need for it since my professor was willing to give us the same help they would. He went over our papers with us, gave us hints and comments so that we would all do well. The tutors are generally well regarded, I didn't really use them but I heard from people who did that they helped a lot. I just had a study buddy and it was just as good. In general almost any UCONN professors will go out of their way to help you. In every subject of mine you could easily see that the professors truely cared about you. This was espeically evident in biology and chemistry, where both professors were extremely enthusiastic about teaching and you could see it. My chemistry professor during our discussion sessions before lab would always come around and ask every individual how they were doing, if they had any questions and he would always help if people did have questions.
In general as far as I can see from my classes so far all of the professors are really good, and truely do care about students.

A perfect example for me this semester was my biology professor last friday before our final. It snowed like crazy, the roads weren't plowed, and school was closed. He said he was going to have a review session for the final, and he did have one, and even though 6 people showed up, he didn't get angry and he just helped us by telling us exactly what we needed to know. All of this after getting into a car accident try to come to the review session. That I feel is real dedication.

bigndude, Sounds like you get a good amount of assistance for such a large school. Thank you for the information. Are most ppl happy there? Thanks.

Most people that I know of are happy. UCONN really has something for everyone as far as clubs and research and things of that nature go, due to the size of the school. I haven't met one person there who is not happy to be there.

That is good to hear!

did only honors program acceptances get mailed?

my friend got her letter this morning ... but she got into the regular program..i didn't find out yet do you think i got regected?

My daughter was accepted today to UConn. She did apply EA during the first week of November....she was not nominated by her school and was not in the Honors Program.

My son applied in mid-November last year and did not hear until the last week of January, so they seem to be much earlier than usual this year.

I received my acceptance letter today. I was not nominated by my school, or offered admissions to the honors program. I did, however, finish my application relatively early :)

LuckyEights and BL1 Congratulations!

BL1 did your son choose UCONN, and if so, how does he like it so far? Is he in the business school, and if so how is he finding his classes? Thank you.

Question: I had my application in mid-November, so when can I expect a decision?

Northeastmom -

My son decided to go to Bentley instead. He applied to Bentley ED. He just got home yesterday from his first semester. He is very happy there. He always wanted business at a small school...so Bentley was always near the top of this list and UConn was always further down the list.

Several of his close high school buddies are freshman in the School of Business at UConn and like it very much.

The technology side of Bentley is a big difference between the two schools. My son lives with his laptop and uses it for everything. All of his classes take advantage of it. At UConn, the students do not get laptops until their junior year and tend to keep their computers in their rooms.

BL1, Oh, thanks.

BL1. Students at UCONN don't use laptops in class because they are lazy. All of the new buildings classrooms are super high tech. Blinds controlled from the front computer, all the lights controlled that way, screens, projectors the works. UCONN spends more money on technology then most people would ever imagine. The thing with laptops is as a freshmen in business school you don't really need one. Your taking core classes and you can use your computer in your room. People who say they need it for everything and take it everywhere are full of it. Taking it to class won't make a difference until you are in your true business classes or other computer heavy classes later on in your career. As far as rankings I would love to see some that put UCONN lower then Bentley in terms of business considering UCONN is in the top 50, and one of the top if not the top in Public New England schools. All around UCONN is also better then Bentley on the lists.

bigndude, I do not think that BL1 meant any ranking list. She was talking about her son's personal preference list.

Bigndude -

I was not talking down UConn as Northeastmom said, it was just my son's preference. Both my wife and I are UConn graduates....so I know UConn very well and have made numerous contributions to the School of Business funding drives. I am very impressed with the strides they have made.

I am very impressed with both schools. The rankings have them close together and in my opinion that is fair. They have different approaches and are very different in size (and one size does not fit all)...but they both turn out excellent graduates.

My son applied in mid-October and has not heard as well. He is a very strong student, in-state and both parents are graduates. A UConn admissions officer came to a meeting at our school and told us they typically get 20,000 applications and they have a relatively small admissions staff.

Has anyone from oos that does not have unusually high stats for UCONN heard yet?
