i've gotten a missing financial aid information letter, and the tone of the letter makes it sound like i've been accepted already; emory's only deciding how much to give me now.

'this letter is in response to your application for financial aid for the 2009-2010 academic year. **We need additional information before your award can be finalized. **We will begin our review of your application once all required documents are received. An accurate financial aid award cannot be determined nor disbursed until your file is complete. '

maybe i'm just being neurotic, but by being finalized, doesn't this imply that i'm getting some kind of financial aid, and, indirectly, that i am accepted regular decision?

Possibly, but look at the sentence after that.

That implies (or actually, states) that they have not even begun to review your application. However, maybe they are referring to your FIN AID application?

Well if it's need blind, usually the financial aid office and the admissions office are completely separate from each other. This could mean one of two things:

1) The admissions office forwards the accepted students' apps to the fin aid office, which makes the packages (which I think is more likely).
2) The admissions office is still reviewing your application (separately) and the fin aid office is making the package (separately).

I think it's the first one, but we'll see :) Congratulations in advance -- if we're right!

check last year's threads....this rings a bell; I think they review everyone's FA, make a FA package and send to admissions.....Norcal dad would probably remember/know......

Don't take what I say as definitive, only because there are exceptions to how things "normally" work, and also because processes are always changing at Emory.

Presently, there are many thousands of FA applications being evaluated and processed at Emory, not only for the College applicants but also the thousands of returning students. Given the volume and the limited financial aid resources, I'd try to be patient.

It's most typical of universities that are "need blind" (e.g., Emory) for the initial evaluation of an admission application to be read/evaluated by the Admission Office, and then sent along to the Office of Financial Aid if the applicant is likely to be admitted. That said, the application processes for Admission and Financial Aid are, to some extent, concurrent events. The FA process is triggered electronically by the submission of FAFSA and CSS PROFILE data that is sent directly by each of those two sponsoring organizations. Your "file" is created electronically and sits there until there is need to act upon it. During the upload/update process, your OPUS account should be updated automatically to allow both you and the Financial Aid Officer (or the one to be assigned) to be able to view your status based on received information/documents. On occasion, there may be either e-mails and/or letters that will be automatically generated based on various criteria -- in your case, you received such a letter, apparently.

To answer your question about "early acceptance", I would NOT make that interpretation ... although, it's a good sign because you probably would not have received the letter if your application for Admission had been rejected. It might not be a bad inference, but it's simply not conclusive. It's incumbent upon you to now forward the additional documents needed by Emory's Office of Financial Aid. I'm guessing that it is probably the copies of your and your parents' Form(s) W-2 and U.S. Tax Returns. The stated deadline is March 1st to get this in. If you do not know, call into the Office of Financial Aid, give the receptionist your name and ask who your assigned FA Officer is. You then will have a contact in the FA office to know who to forward (I liked Priority Mail with Confirmation of Delivery option) your documents to.

When you receive your RD decision (and assuming admitted), it will be accompanied by a separate estimated Financial Aid Award which is still subject to finalization (i.e., in case you receive some external scholarship, etc., which may then impact your package). This will then allow you to begin comparison of all FA packages from schools that admit you.

^ Nahs, my D received exactly the same letter as yours.. and i think it's a very good sign!! why are they saying that they are finalizing an award?? why this sentence???

I can't speak for Emory, but IMO, this is just a standard letter that gets sent out when some item is missing from your finaid app. And yes, the word 'final' generates all kinds of visions, but in the finaid world, it just means that anything else they give you is just 'preliminary'. The point being, IFF you are accepted Emory can only provide you with an accurate (aka final) finaid award if all of your items are submitted on a timely basis. If you need to compare financial aid offers from other colleges, it is better to compare final offers, not preliminary, thus ya gotta send your stuff in.

I got the recorded phone call asking for 2008 taxes, which somehow I didn't know we needed to send in, so confusing with IDOC for some schools and some not requiring returns at all.

I kind of doubt that it is in any way shape or form a likely notification. Most schools will contact students if they're missing information regardless.

I doubt that its a likely letter, my son got the same phone call, but his OPUS says they have not received his transcript and Counselor recommendation. So they could not have reviewed his applications.

I got one of those calls, too, but we are not going to qualify for any finaid so my parents haven't sent in any documents. I wish it meant something, but I am thinking they are doing this independently from admissions. The phone call was more of a reminder, but the letter does make it tempting to read something into it. Did the people that received the letter also receive calls or any emails?

Check the OPUS finaid page; it will show what is missing.

my D received the letter and the phone call! the letter is saying that they are waiting for the financial part to be completed in order for her to receive a financial award( scholarship), why are they talking about a financial award if they will rejected her? in that case they could have said :"we need the following financial informations to complete your file.." something just random! well... we'll know soon.. anyways!
