Early Action Class of 2023 - VT

I assume you filled out the federal info - and well maybe they didn’t see a need (I don’t know your situation).

@cbl1 oh I knew I wouldn’t get any need based aid at VT, I do in fact need it but am right on that middle class line of “doesn’t need it on paper, but really actually does”. hence why I was hoping for some, in my opinion well deserved merit based aid.

just saying you cant get merit based without fed form. No way to know how they divey up - I assume they do more for out of state applicants as they have to flip a much higher original bill.

I did fill out the FAFSA. just got nothing

@ArborS Yes, I understand it’s disappointing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Virginia students with the same stats. My son has a 1530 SAT (not superscored), 4.5 GPA weighted (4.0 unweighted), ranked 5th in a class of 507, Commended National Merit Scholar, AP scholar with Distinction (completed 7 APs–currently has 5 more APs in this years schedule), is taking Math at the Community College because he ran out of math classes offered at the High School level (and getting A’s in those classes too), and is involved in clubs, athletics, and volunteering. He wasn’t offered merit at ANY of the Virginia schools which he applied. He was, however, offered admission. We’re grateful. Sure, merit would have been nice–and maybe swayed his decision to pick one school over another, but we weren’t expecting it from a top tier Virginia School. Too many other Virginia students that are exceptional achievers.

@VAMom2019 wish I lived in montana… with these stats id get in everywhere

@proudpapano2 was your post directed to me? I replied because I am a parent that went back to school and was offering my insight as an adult who spent a couple of years on campus and worked with/observed the students. I am currently on this board because my S19 applied to VTech and is accepted and also my D20 will be applying. We are considering options for them.

Sorry, can’t figure out how to delete my post…

“Invited” for honors posted today for us

@ArborS Merit aid is just not something VT does. They have a couple of big, school specific, scholarships and then a bunch of small ones you can apply for, from year to year. But merit aid for incoming Freshman is not something you see al ot of. @Hg097 experience is first time I have seen any reference to an award that high.

I wouldn’t say pulling loans is a terrible thing. I have cousins who graduated from top-tier universities majoring in aerospace and chemical engineering, pre-med, and pre-law degrees and don’t even think twice about their loans. The only somewhat annoying part about loans is slowly paying them off, but you honestly don’t even notice. College is hard as it is. If VT is your top choice and you think you’ll be successful there, I’d pull the loans. Obviously graduating debt free is the goal and all, but I’m just saying to really weigh your options of going to a lesser school that you are less likely to succeed at versus a well-known research university that you think you may do well at. But in the end, it’s your call.

If you’re in my situation, (I qualify as 100% need-based and have a zero EFC) I was going to be pulling student loans no matter where I went (In-state/Out-of-state). I decided the 10k difference in the loan I’d be pulling for VT was worth it.

Each of my kids will be borrowing $5,000 a year for their 4 years. They’ll each have a $20,000 student loan to pay off after graduation. That’s roughly $200 a month for 10 years.

They’ll be fine.

That’s roughly what I borrowed over 5 years from 1987-1992. Starting salary was $27k. Manageable debt and buildnig credit isn’t a bad thing at all.

@bboop42 Thanks for perspective. Loan is not pleasant thing that hangs on for a long time.

It seems to be a very competitive class. Our OOS D Exploring Science major (1580 SAT, 4.8 GPA, All 5’s on AP and the rest Honors) did not receive any merit aid. They liked her enough to admit, but was missing something they were looking for when offering merit aid. Congratulations to those that received it! She was really excited about VT, but not sure it makes sense at full price compared to other options. Waiting on honors notifications before making any decisions.

My son was accepted on Friday. School of neuroscience. We’re from PA

@cshigh Unfortunately, some level loans are a necessary evil when it comes to college these days.

@allieandjoe same with my son - school of neuroscience. We are from Maryland. He is really considering going there, more so than I thought he would. He was 99% sure of another college and now he is leaning towards VT once he found out his acceptance.

Same here. My son was accepted OOS Engineering 1510 SAT, 3.7 GPA, top 10% of his class of 500, Eagle Scout, competitive swimmer, 7 AP classes and $0 Merit money and no invitation to the honors College. Tech was his first choice ( i grew up in Blacksburg and many of my family are still there) but at full price I not know. He was also accepted to Delaware, Maryland, and NC State for Chem E and they all offered him Honors college. Very Happy he was accepted but a little disappointed.
