Honors colleges have always a bit of a mystery to me. Not sure my daughter even applied to any of the ones at Schools she considered. The selection criteria are often unclear, and my daughter was not inclined to add complexity of honors college, and the stress of added requirements and gpa minimums, to tne already fraught transition to college generally.
@collsander and @PhilipM
Engineering students do not need, and should not care about, Honors College.
Itâs nice to be invited, but thatâs where the niceties end.
DM me for further insights.
What about the living/learning communities for Engineering students (Galileo/Hypatia)? A good idea? Pros/cons?
HIGHLY recommended. The value of living with other engineering students who are all taking the same classes and suffering through the same difficulties is immeasurable.
There are some cons, like the community is a bit ânerdyâ but not too bad. And Lee Hall isnât the best but itâs bearable.
@STEM2017 Thanks!
First year Honors College seminar teaches you how to make your four-year schedule ensuring you graduate with honors.
First year Galileo/Hypatia seminar teaches you how to write a cover letter and resume and how to navigate the world of career fairs and job searches.
Which would you think is more valuable?
@STEM2017 thanks so much for the insight I will pass along to my son. I know he is very interested in the Living / Learning communities. My cousin who is a VT grade ( much younger than myself) said he was the best experience.
VT is #1 on his list but I think the main concern is the lack of Merit aid as we will be paying full price OOS. He was offered Scholarships at other universities.
@STEM2017 I see your point. One thing I heard, though, is that Honors students get their first pick of classes for all four years. Any idea if this is true?
@c151515 Honors students do have some registration priorities but I think the benefit is overrated. Engineers in junior and senior year have no problem getting their specialized classes. Freshman and sophomores might benefit getting their âperfectâ schedule but I donât think itâs worth the headaches.
VT is big, but not huge. Youâll get your classesâŠespecially engineering students.
Will Tech be sending letters of acceptance/welcome packages in the mail?
Mt daughter, who is not an Engineering student, is an LLC for arts. Loves it
@STEM2017 I am very new to Virginia TECH, which are LLC dorms for engineering at Virginia Tech?
Also does anybody know when the Housing engineering LLC application opens?
My son is majoring in biochemistry. Would honors college be too hard with that major? Is there an LLC that would be better?
Info on LLCs. https://llc.vt.edu/. @cakeisgreat, Orion, formally known as DaVinci and Curie (Male and Female respectively), is the Sciences LLC.
@AAA124555 The engineering LLC is Galileo (men) and Hypatia (women) and they are located together in Lee Hall. More info in the link posted above. Again, I highly recommend it.
When you complete your housing contract they ask you the LLC you want to be in.
The housing contracts are open now so you should complete now to get ahead in line.
Galileo and Hypatia have a 300-500 word essay question as part of the application. So even if you havenât committed to VT yet, you can start thinking about your essayâŠ
âWhy do you want to be part of Hypatia/Galileo? Briefly explain how you would bring a unique perspective, background, or set of experiences to our community.â
The info is here⊠https://eng.vt.edu/ceed/ceed-undergraduate-programs/communities/apply-for-engineering-residential-programs.html
Does anyone know if the Orion LLC (formerly Da Vinci & Curie) application has an essay? If so, what is the prompt or where can I find the prompt? I looked and found nothing.
@STEM2017 thank you so much very useful information, I will ask my son to work on that. If you donât mind me asking did your son decide where he wants to go? Is it UMD or Virginia Tech?
