Early Action Class of 2023 - VT

Yeah, still waiting on that packet!! FYI for what its worth to others…My daughter applied to NC State (early) and VT. She was waitlisted to regular admission at NC State and accepted (OOS) to Va Tech. Anecdotally looking at all the posts (those deferred/waitlisted on NC and Tech), the theme is NC State just went down the line on ACT/SAT scores (Being lazy), where as, VT focused more on at GPA (and courses) AS IT SHOULD BE, especially in Engineering.

A common thread seems to be that more and more schools are focusing on rigor of coursework and associated grades rather than standardized test scores. I agree that’s a better evaluation criteria.

Helpful hint for your accepted students - tell them to use VT, Tech, Virginia Tech, VPI when they talk about their school. They’ll get roasted mercilessly if the call it “Vah-Tech” or “Vee-Tech”.

@fairfaxgator we are coming in the afternoon of April 6 and attending the April 7 Hokie Focus day. I have a son who will be in business.

Not sure what it’s like for admitted students day, or how different the info/activities are vs. if you visited previously on an open house weekend - but hotels fill up really quickly for orientation, move in week, and family weekends. So book early if you can!

Thanks so much to everyone that responded! Your comments were so helpful and comforting, and for those who have indicated they are in the same boat, I feel you. It’s certainly been a wild ride but I believe we’re landing in a good place. Everything happens for a reason. I loved OSU and wish I looked into it when during my college search. She seems to be getting more excited, especially since she found out OSU will give her credit for AP Calc and VT will not. I just think that if VT doesn’t try a little harder to recruit excellent OOS candidates, their national reputation will eventually suffer. I understand they are a land grant institution and have requirements for in-state percentages, but other land grants seem to have money to throw toward candidates they really want. So onto the money trail we go!

@fairfaxgator We’re doing the April 6th accepted student day. I’m not expecting it to be much different from the open house we attended, but I do like accepted student days because I believe once they are “in” they do look at things differently. I want DS to have the on-campus experience again as an accepted student.

we will be attending Hokie Focus on the 7th. Even though I am very familiar with VT and Blacksburg as I grew up there and my son has been there many times, I believe it is important to help him make his decision. Hotels are very hard to come by. I booked mine weeks ago we are OOS and it is easier than staying with family.

I booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express this morning. They still had rooms and it looks pretty new/clean. A lot of other places had at least one night sold out…

The Inn at Va Tech is on campus…We stayed there last weekend.

@markmil1 as did we!

My feeling is that VT Engineering does not have to recruit excellent OOS student very much. The word is out. Over the last 5 years, feels like lots of top students from New England (where I am) are applying to VT Engineering. As expensive as OOS is, it is still significantly cheaper than full pay at the private schools (where financial aid is typically need based, not merit based). For example - according to US News, tuition and fees at Tufts is $56,382 versus $31,304 OOS at Virginia Tech. It may make you feel better to know that Ohio State ($4.2B) has a much bigger endowment than Virginia Tech ($0.987M), which I imagine influences financial aid awards. Even adjusting for number of undergraduates, Ohio State has a significantly higher endowment per student. I calculate OSU at $0.091M per 45,946 undergraduates versus VT at $0.036M per 27,193 undergraduates, using numbers from US News.

Inn at Virginia tech has parent club where you get room discount and other perks.

Inn at Virginia Tech and Main Street Inn are both very nice. Mountain Lake Lodge (where Dirty Dancing was filmed) is a few miles out of town. As noted, it can be hard to get rooms at the most popular places during busy weekends. Hope you enjoy your visits to Blacksburg!

Personally I have been staying at the new Marriott residence in across street from inn at Virginia Tech.

Will make a note not to call them CHOKIES anymore as my D may be going there…

We are there April 6…we’ve never been to VT…first visit…I’m hoping D picks it…

We have also stayed at the new Marriott when we visited in the summer, and we will stay again for the accepted student day on the 6th

We will be attending Hokie Focus on Apr 6th. Women’s Preview Weekend for Girls in Engineering also same weekend. My D is staying in Lee Hall, we will stay in the hotel. We visited the campus couple of times. I’m not sure what to expect in Hokie Focus, I think this time she will look at campus in a different angle. BTW we committed to VT already.

My son was accepted two weeks ago for Engineering. He was hoping to be admitted to the Honors College. Have all of those invitations been sent out or is that March 15. Does HC invite typically bring in state tuition at VT. Thx!

@ncengineer123 I don’t know if all the honors invitations have gone out, but for those I know that were invited, they went out a week or two ago. I don’t believe that being invited to the honors college would bring you to a state tuition level, however, when we attended the open house, certain degrees that were invited to the honors program had the possibility of merit scholarships attached. I can’t remember exactly what those degrees were off the top of my head, but I’m sure they must have it listed on the school website.
