D “ADMITTED”! Very excited! GPA 3.5, 4AP classes Sr. year, 26 ACT, 1800 SAT. Out of State. Many extra curricular activities. She was strongly encouraged to take the higher level AP courses by an admissions counselor for JMU. She is thrilled! Yet our hearts break for those who were deferred and have to wait until March, and those who were denied. This is such an awful process! Wishing all the best!

D admitted with a 3.67 weighted, 1330/1600 SAT, in-state student, will graduate with 6 APs. Lots of extracurriculars. Still planning to audition for theater program in February, but very excited to have this acceptance in hand.

Congrats to all of those accepted. My caucasion OOS S from NJ was accepted. 3.67 weighted GPA with strong upward trend. 1390/1970 on SAT’s. 7 AP’s and everything else is honors except english. He has a ton of extracurriculars and a varsity sport all 4 years.

To NTRNICH my son was deferred at Villanova while yours was accepted and our sons seem very similar. Makes no sense. He would have liked to have heard something positive from Villanova but very happy he is in at JMU.

carj4kids: JMU accepts studnets into the university as a whole, not to separate colleges or majors (as VA Tech does, for example). Students can generally major in what they want to and can easily change their major, with the exception of some that have special prerequisites, auditions, or gpa requirements, such as business, music, theater, engineering, or nursing. But it is still pretty easy to change between those and something else, as long as you have the prereqs down. Students have a chance to declare a major when they meet with their advisers at Springboard Orientation in the summer, or they can list undecided - just have to declare by mid year of sophomore year, I think. They can also change their mind later if they want to. This is a better system, because at some of those colleges where you’re accepted into certain colleges, it can be hard to switch colleges if you change your mind (which 70% of students do). At JMU you can change without much trouble – just need to check with your adviser and make the change (and make sure you have enough requirements in the new major to graduate on time).

I believe that Art Design & Art History, also have a specific prerequisite to be admitted to the major, as does School of Media Arts & Design.

Some of the “restricted programs” at JMU have an opportunity to audition, portfolio review, interview for admittance to the program directly as a freshman. Other “restricted programs” have specific prerequisite requirements to be completed at the college level, and the application to the major takes place at the end of freshman or sophomore year.
