Hi guys I recently heard about the EA for college app. This fall, I will have to apply for colleges. Is Early action way better than early decision? Which do colleges prefer?

Few colleges have both EA and ED. So whether ‘Early action [is] way better than early decision’ can be answered by looking at the admission plans offered by the colleges.

Do you know the difference between EA and ED? It seems like you don’t. Early Decision means that if that school accepts, you’re definitely going to that school, where as Early Action just means you send in your application early to get an earlier admission response. Not all schools offer ED, but the ones that do I would think prefer it because it guarantees them a new student (to them: a new money source), but you can only apply ED to one school where as you can apply EA to as many schools as you want without committing to any of them. Hope this helps and good luck with your applications!

I know the differences, but my related question is does EA help? My oldest is ramping up for the process and there are two schools he really, really wants and both are a bit of a stretch. Should he apply EA or regular admission with the hope that he lifts his grades a bit more in the fall? (which may or may not happen) TIA

@1sttimer125 that’s a tough call. The statistics seem to indicate a bump in EA at some schools but the case can be made that a good portion of those students are hooked (athletes) and the rest of the pool doesn’t get that bump. It’s not going to be much of a lift to his cum GPA with only one more semester in but to show some consistent increases over time it might be worth waiting.
