Early Decision question

Perhaps this is an obvious question, but I was browsing through some stats profiles, and saw a few people who had applied to Columbia ED in addition to some non-restrictive EA schools (like UChicago). Does this mean that seniors may apply to Columbia as well as non-restrictive EA schools such as MIT, Caltech, and UChicago (even though they MUST attend Columbia if accepted)?

^^ I was reading about something like that too. It sounds very intense.

My younger son applied ED to Columbia and EA to Chicago. When he was admitted to Columbia, he withdrew his application to the University of Chicago. No fuss, no muss.

Yes; you may apply to multiple schools early action but only one under early decision - if accepted to the one that was early decision, you MUST go to that school …(unless a livable financial aid package can in no way be worked out)
