Early Decision when Not Matched with Any Ranked Colleges?

I just read something that's kinda confusing for me on the Questbridge page for Northwestern. On this page http://www.questbridge.org/northwestern-app-requirements under the section that talks about admission for National College Match participants:

For finalists - Ranked Northwestern for College Match (but did not match with a binding college) --
Can I apply Early Decision?
Yes.
Non-matched finalists will be notified via email and will have the option of being considered for Early Decision or Regular Decision or may withdraw their application. If you are not matched at would like to apply Early Decision, send an email to Antonia Garcia ( antonia-garcia@northwestern.edu) by December 5th.

From my understanding, NU has an ED deadline of Nov. 1 just like others; does this mean it will make a special case and extend the deadline for College Match finalists, giving them a second chance in applying early? Also could anyone inform me if other participating colleges do the same?

Much appreciated.

I agree with your interpretation that they allow a special ED case for non matched finalists that listed NU in the Match. That is the first I have heard of that, so you will have to check each college page. Thanks for the heads up.

Amherst does the same thing.
http://www.questbridge.org/amherst-app-requirements

No. However, Finalists who rank Dartmouth but are not matched with Dartmouth or another binding college, may be offered the option of receiving an Early Decision admissions decision. Eligible applicants will receive an e-mail in early December with more details and instructions.

I might seriously consider QB now.

Most colleges allow ED II though, so I guess they don’t really pose a conflict with the restrictions set by QB

OP my S was a non-matched finalist and I can attest to Northwestern personally. He received his email from Northwestern rejecting him as a match, but, at the same time was “offered” intention of admission. All he had to do was make a decision to ED or RD. Since ED was binding and he was not sure on FinAid he chose RD. He wanted the option of being able to weigh offers and choose. Long story short he received his official admission from NU and was waitlisted at Vanderbilt. He is very excited to attend NU with a phenomenal FinAid package.

Hi EOW2012: congratulations on your son’s success! NU is definitely a top choice I’m considering, and I’ve heard nothing but good comments about its FinAid. Hope he have a wonderful college career at Evanston.

kuan9611. Good luck to you as you go through this process. It is worth it. Hopefully you are chosen as a finalist.

Also OP and future Questies, Dartmouth isn’t the only school that exclusively invites some applicants to apply Early Decision. Columbia didn’t match me, but sent me an email right after the match results came out asking if I wanted to be considered for Early Decision. I accepted their offer and was accepted. If you receive an ED invitation from a school that doesn’t usually allow Match applicants to apply ED, it is usually a likely.
