Hello! Currently, I’m a high school freshman, and I was wondering how graduating early might affect my chances of college admission. I am taking the most rigorous schedule possible (well, excluding accelerated tech or art), which is all honors available (technically, it is possible to double up on honors sciences, but nobody does that). I plan to stay on the most rigorous schedule throughout high school, taking all honors available and 1 AP in sophomore year, and taking 6 APs and 2 honors in junior year. If I do decide to graduate early, I would have the options of either surrendering my elective spots to double up on English and Social Studies, or proceeding normally but taking the GED at the end of the year. Would this affect my chances in any way?
This is discussed multiple times. Try the search function here. FYI, most top tier kids have enough credits to meet state minimum grad requirements and graduate early. They WANT a 12th year to take AP Physics or AP Calc BC or AP French or whatnot. An extra year also gives them more time to take and retake ACT/SATs
Unless you’ve exhausted what your school has to offer (it does happen), my question to you is – why must you rush?
You can do your plan and get admitted to a college. Likely, your options may be better if you broadly dive into your school’s offerings.
Have you looked into Dual Enrollment? You take Community College classes while still in HS.
Use senior year to mature and get leadership positions.
Even if you are academically prepared for college work, there are social implications to starting college early. I agree with the comments above. What’s the rush?
