Early writes?

I just received a letter of acceptance from Smith College in the mail today! These are the "early writes," right?

Yes, indeed (assuming you weren’t an ED2 applicant). Don’t be surprised if it is followed by a STRIDE or other scholarship offer.

Yup! I just got one too as a RD applicant. Came with a handwritten note and everything from the Dean of Admission. I’m hoping for a scholarship since I’m near to full pay, or else I’ll end up going to a UC…otherwise Smith is definitely my first choice.

That’s awesome girls! Hope you’ll pick Smith so we can see each other on campus next fall :)

I also received an early write! Exciting :)

Good for the young women receiving these “early writes.” My daughter was thrilled to receive one last year – sort of, out of the blue-- boom, you are accepted. Nice. D accepted admission and loves Smith. Nice touch by Smith Admissions and the Dean.

As I recall, my D’s Early Write from Smith was good for about three wild
runs up and down the hallway in our home while whooping and cheering. Now, as a second year, she MAY have calmed down a bit… to “just” loving Smith.

Congrats to all.

It’s great to hear how much others have loved Smith! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit there for the summer visiting day, though we were caught in an impressive downpour. They had set up the program so that it involved a lot of different parts of campus, which became pretty funny by the end of the day! My daughter was delighted to get her letter Saturday – I wish more schools would do this. “Likely letters” are nice, but this is so much more definite! Now we’ll have to see what the financial aid and scholarship folks think. As a parent, it was scary to see a thin envelope in our mail, though!

Just got my early write in the mail today! Yeah! I am so excited and congrats to everyone else <33

I got one too!! Aaah, I’m so happy right now  My first acceptance <3 Do you think the personal notes are clues to why we were accepted early? Congrats everyone!

I may or may not have just %^&* myself - Smith is my number one choice and getting an early admit letter was a dream come true! Hopefully they can give me enough fin. aid to go - that’s the only obstacle left.

I got an email congratulating me on admission to the class of 2017 and an invite to an online chat. However, I haven’t gotten a letter yet in the mail. Should I assume I’ve gotten in?? I’ve heard that colleges sometimes accidentally send out these emails.

soyamoo–

My DD just received her letter and email today. I would think your letter should arrive in the next few days. Congrats to you and everyone else! Like others, we’re hoping the financial aid award will allow DD to attend.

I got in, too! And a handwritten note from the dean of admissions  I love Smith but I also got into University of Michigan (in state) so if I don’t get a scholarship that makes Smith comparable in price, I’ll end up there (which is totally fine with me!). Also waiting on Wellesley & Barnard but I doubt I’ll get into either haha

The handwritten note made my day! I didn’t know someone would take the time to do that!

One of my friends says she’s heard back from Smith and received a STRIDE offer. I’m not surprised I didn’t get one (I do nothing exceptional, haha), but did they send them out already? I was under the impression they’re sent out on the regular admission date.

Last year the early writes came out just before Wellesley’s early evaluation. Strides and Zollmans were notified a few weeks later, shortly before the official RD notification date. I think Smith has followed this pattern for at least the past few years. Many, but not all, of the early writes got merit scholarships. Congratulations to you all!

Got my early write today! :)

What would you say the chances are for a merit scholarship for early writes? I’m near/full pay at Smith and as much as I would love to attend, it all comes down to the financial aspect.

I doubt anyone can tell you a number, but chances are pretty good. Smith gives out about 200 Strides (expecting that about 25% will attend) and 10 Zollmans, from what I understand. I don’t know how many early writes are given out, but I would guess that the committee for merit scholarships does most or all of its work once the early writes are selected. A good number of the kids writing on last year’s early write thread (when my D applied) seemed to get Strides, but then people are much more likely to write in with good news than bad. One poster on last year’s thread who was hoping for a Stride did not get one, so there’s no guarantee.

@CIEE83 - Only 25% of people who receive STRIDEs attend? That seems rather low for such a great scholarship. Now I’m curious about the yield rate on Zollmans, too. I’d imagine that’d be much higher.
