Where can I wash dishes in East Quad? And how long are there seriously only going to be two washers and two dryers? O.O The woman at the desk said she had no idea and it sounded as if she doubted we'd even get new ones by the end of the semester, but her and I hit things off on a decidedly negative note this morning so perhaps she was just trying to be mean. Just curious how long I'll be showering with my clothes on. XD And I don't think meal plans start until at least tomorrow and I am STARVING and want to make food, but I'd want to clean up before roommate arrives tomorroq and there's no sink in my room and it says not to use the bathroom sinks. Is there a solution to this or do I just have to wait until it rains?

For the eating food now, you could always go out if you don’t mind spending a few extra bucks. Two blocks down from East Quad on the corner of Church & South U is a handy restaurant called BTB Burrito – it’s super cheap and super yummy.

As for the dryers, I’m not living in East Quad, but I simply CANNOT imagine they would only have 2 washers and 2 dryers for very long. I used to live in an apartment building with 16 tenants that has as many washers and dryers, and there was always a line, even for that amount of people far smaller than the number of people living in East Quad! The lady probably was being snooty because she simply didn’t know what she was talking about. I’d bet you it’ll be fixed soon.

My parents left me with $7 so that should hopefully keep me relatively well fed until meal plans start, I have some fruit and veggies in my room too, but I haven’t had hot food in days and I REALLY want to make a hot dog. XD I guess I will just have to investigate that further and in the meantime check out BTB Burrito. Thanks for the tip! :)

This woman saw my fridge when my dad was wheeling it inside at check in, which is 4.4 cubic feet and from what I read on the housing website is below the maximum fridge size, and started yelling EXCUSE ME I DON’T THINK THIS FRIDGE IS LEGAL YOU ARE GOING TO BLOW THE WHOLE BUILDINGS POWER OUT AND THATS JUST NOT BEING A GOOD COMMUNITY MEMBER. YOU HAVE TO BE MORE CONSIDERATE THAN THAT. I was horrified. We spent so much money on it and I’d checked all the restrictions and made sure it was okay, and it was my first time on official UM student business (lol) and was feeling very timid and she was shouting for the whole lobby to hear and clearly trying to attract attention. We double checked the amperage draw and the restrictions again and YEP FRIDGE IS FINE. Has been running all day along with computer, lights, tv, and a moment ago a hair dryer, too-- all at the same time! Must be some kind of magic. Funny thing is, I got such a big one thinking of my roommate and how she might like to have a decent amount of space for her own stuff-- or how I might like to have enough food to share with her and my neighbors. Such a bad community member. Wonderful way to greet a brand new student. And the next thing she tells me is that I can’t wash my clothes. Seriously?!

Your parents left you with $7? Wow, my kids are very spoiled.

I don’t think it’s spoiling so long as they know that they are lucky and don’t think they are entitled to anything. I am sure my mom would have liked to have given me more if she had it, even if she isn’t one to give us money for anything-- she gave me everything she had in her purse at the time and got my dad to buy me some snacks for my fridge, which he also bought for me a few months ago. I am very lucky. Even luckier still, she said she’d deposit $20 into my account when she and my dad get paid next week, so that’ll be nice, I haven’t had that kind of spending money since my winter seasonal job ended and she is just handing it to me for free, and they work so hard. Some would even say I am spoiled, my mom emptied her purse for me and my parents agreed to cosign a $48,000 loan so I could finish my degree at Michigan. I consider myself VERY lucky to have what I do. Can’t say I wouldn’t have done backflips for another ten bucks, but meal plans start soon and it’s not as if I’ll be going hungry. My parents, on the other hand, might be eating cheese and crackers for a few weeks with how much my fridge cost them.

“Your parents left you with $7? Wow, my kids are very spoiled.”

That’s what I was thinking… About myself though. I spend more than that on food in a day, every day.

$7 should buy you some hot dogs. Take the bus down to Bushes or Meijers. I imagine it’s enough to buy 20 hot dogs and a loaf of bread. Get some ketchup and mustard packets somewhere.

I have hot dogs but no microwave until tomorrow. I have a potentially illegal rice cooker that I could actually boil it in-- or make soup in, but I don’t know where I could wash the rice cooker afterward since there are no sinks that I can find without signs saying specifically not to wash dishes. I am about to have cookies for dinner if I don’t come up with something clever by the time I get out of the shower.

I have been putting showering off. XD EQ got REALLY loud after 10, though it seems to be going in spurts, and I am not used to prancing around in my bathrobe with people around. o.O I keep hoping in vain that it will quiet down enough for me to sneak around the corner, but EQ’s full move in day isn’t even until tomorrow so I am sure it will only get worse this week!

See if someone else in your dorm has a microwave.

Meijer is open 24/7 if you can get down there somehow.

meijer isnt open 24/7. Kroger is.

"or do I just have to wait until it rains? "

LOL I hope not xP

Feathr, you’re wrong. Kroger may be too (I’m not sure) but Meijer definately is.

I think they are serving food already at South Quad. I’m pretty sure my daughter’s roommate mentioned that. Your food plan should work at any dorm, so go eat something at another dorm. You are breaking my heart.

Actually, I just checked and East Quad starts serving today, so you are all set.

^Thank goodness re EQ cafeteria. Also note that the Hill is open as well, as Couzins and Lloyd moved in yesterday. I enjoyed their offerings; you may too.
TK, have you had a chance to meet your RA yet? Presumably the fridge nazi was not your RA. Try to locate same and let them know you’ve had a rough start and need a tour of available sinks/laundry locations : ) My s’s RA at Lloyd must have checked in on him 5x yesterday, offered to take him over for dinner (but we were going out) and otherwise stood on his head to welcome him. Trust that the fridge nazi is likely the exception rather than the rule on campus, and best wishes for your acclimatizing!
Cheers,
K

There’s always free food on campus the first week. Earlier today I waited to go to breakfast w/ my roomate (this is 8 in the morning) and other people in the house, but no one woke up, so I went to breakfast at Bursleys (9:15), but it had already closed. But outside of Bursleys Dining Hall they set up a table with muffins and tea and coffee, so that was breakfast. They’re also having a free BBQ up at North Campus from 5 to 9, but it’s not vegetarian friendly.

I have the unlimited dining plan, so I ate at E Quad today and I actually like it … the whole vegetarian and organic thing is there.

Dining halls I know are open:
S Quad
E Quad
Bursleys
Markley

Dining halls I know are definitely closed:
W Quad

about the laundry machines, I hope they are back soon! Last year there was about fifteen washers + fifteen dryers, and even then it would be hellish sometimes finding a machine open. It would be ridiculous for them to not have them installed withing a couple of weeks. If they aren’t, we will just have to protest :D

And yeah, the cafeteria should be open! You might be confused because East Quad has two cafeterias, which are always open at different times. If the one nearest you is not open when you check, walk all the way around to the other side and check the other one (you can see the hours on the housing website, I believe.)

Also…great recommendation for that seven bucks of yours…right outside of East Quad, across the street from Pizza House is a tiny pizza place called Back Room. You walk in, pay them a single dollar, and get a DELICIOUS warm, hot slice of pizza!

p.s Back Room is pretty much always open. Past midnight, even. :D

But it tastes like ass. Pizza house is about 100 feet away from East Quad, and it’s open til 4 am daily. And it’s awesome.

“taste like ass”

nice.

I LOVE that pizza place. My friend and I just went there yesterday and my boyfriend and I have been frequenting it the past few weeks. Best ass I’ve ever tasted then. :P

I was interested in trying Pizza House too though, but I assumed it would be more expensive and I am a tad on the poor side. XD East Quad’s dinner menu is going to cause me to starve though so at the moment I think I am walking to South Quad if I can find it.

Talking about pizza, MoJo has some really good stuff. I had their chicken and carmelized onion pizza and I liked it. It didn’t taste like dorm food, at least. Bad thing is that MoJo tends to be really really busy.
