East Quad

So this is gonna be my housing in the fall. I already know it's on central campus (great) and that the food completely blows (damn), but what else is there to know about it? is the location good? rooms nice, big? how many freshmen usually get put there? Any info would be great. thanks.

Also, i'm not in the residential college or any type of learning communities.

I was put in East Quad, too. And I’m also not in the residential college or in any learning community. I heard that the rooms are on the bigger side. Glad to be on central campus but a little nervous about this dorm.

East Quad has one of the best geographic locations as far as being close to classes BUT the RC is in east quad. Historically, many University students see the RC students as strange…justifiably. Last year, there was the infamous RC student who believed he was a pirate. You should have seen his room. His bed was transformed into a ship

…and the worst part about it, Im 100% serious

aaaaahhhh ■■■

That actually sounds ****in hilarious. As long as that dudes room isn’t next to me, I’d probably find it entertaining lol.

Anyone else know anything about east quad?

As Ibleedblue said the only things I know for a fact are that its location is really good (considered to be the best location along with West and South Quad, although West and South are considered to be better dorms overall), it’s close to classes around the diag, Angel Hall, Lorch, East Hall, etc. and both the Hatcher Grad Lib and the UGLI, the downtown restaurants and shops like NYPD, Jimmy John’s, Chipotle’s, Panchero’s, Big Ten Burrito, Ulrich’s Bookstore and Campus Den and close to all the upperclassmen house parties on East U and frat houses like PIKE and SAE. The rooms are pretty big as well…

However, other then that I have heard from my friends rumors similar to what have been said above that there are a large amount of weird things that go on and some really weird kids in East Quad. I really don’t care though as long as I get along with my roommate. I’m probably just as curious as you though ttZero2 since I’m living in East Quad next year as well. In general though, I’m just really excited to be in Ann Arbor next year and I wish I could fast forward these next like 13-14 weeks and welcome week would roll around.

Hey!
I was a non-RC (residential college) freshman in EQ last year- unfortunately, what everyone says about it being weird is completely true. But, in the end, I actually loved living in East Quad, and wouldn’t have traded my experience there for anything!
You can’t beat the location! VERY close to class, the UGLi, etc. Even better- very close to late night food options. Nothing is better than being able to stumble out of the back door of East Quad at 3am and heading 1/2 a block over to Jimmy John’s or Backroom for a slice of pizza.

The rooms in EQ are pretty big, in comparison to others, especially those on the hill, where a lot of your fellow freshman will be (now, most of those rooms are tiny enough to be jail cells!).

EQ food- The dining hall BLOWS. I repeat, it could not suck more if they tried to make it bad (which, actually, they might.) at first, you think ‘oh, i’ll just go to another dining hall, whatever’. You don’t. Your college-kid laziness kicks in, and you realize that walking up to the dining center on the hill is sooo not worth it, so you suffer through another east quad meal. Then, a few hours later, you’re hungry again. So what now? A trip down to the basement to the Halfway Inn (better known as the Half Ass)- it serves greasy fried food, sodas, energy drinks, ice cream, etc (if you’re lucky, sometimes you’ll get down there just as they put the fruit out into the display case- yummy!) A word of advice- if you see something you want at the half-ass, do not say to yourself “oh, i’ll come back later and get it”. It will NOT be there (example - the abovementioned fruit. Or, the small containers of milk).

All in all, no matter what crazy things you hear about EQ, it really is what you make of it. I didn’t think i’d last the year, but in the end, I loved every minute of it. And, by april, when I walked past that pirate kid in the laundry room or rescomp (the computer lab), I didn’t even notice his eyepatch or sword anymore. And I might even be a better person for it.

Go Blue!

I’m living in east quad too. Cooley house. But I am part of RC, and in my defense i had no idea about the stigma attached to it. I just wanted the criminal justice minor. But I’m sure i’ll be able to deal. I was curious about WiFi in the dorms. And anything about the Residential singers.

LOL, I hope there’s a Pirate kid next to my dorm in college!

I think you Michigan folks may be spoiled when it comes to cafeteria food. I have eaten in several cafeterias at other schools and I have eaten at EQ a couple times, and EQ is by far the best I’ve encountered so far. I actually really like the food at EQ so long as the vegetarian food is avoided (not my cup of tea). Perhaps it’s just because I am used to frozen food at home because nobody grocery shops and because the food at Eastern Michigan is GOD AWFUL-- I have gotten food poisoning three times in one semester, but I was not offended by the food at EQ and there are other places to eat not that far away. There’s a pizza place, I can’t remember what it’s called, that’s like a block away that is DELICIOUS and sells pizza like a buck a slice-- that’ll do in a pinch if you can’t stand EQ and can’t bear to walk anywhere else-- which I think you’ll find you can if you really hate the food at EQ. It’s also right by a cafe that I like, too, that has a nice lounge in the basement. I’ll be living at EQ this year, too. I think it definitely looks the nicest on the inside compared to the few other res halls I’ve seen, and I hear it’s a really nice place to live. That’s where I’m going to be, too! Strauss House. :)

You can come up with a whole book of reasons to be unhappy with ANY residence hall at any university. Your best bet is going to be not to agonize over it before you even get there and experience it for yourself, you’re cheating yourself if you talk yourself out of liking your new home before you even move in.

I am a student in the RC, but don’t worry! I don’t bite.

Hear me out.

First of all, East Quad is an excellent dorm, whether or not you are in the RC, but that is, of course, a plus since we have classes two feet from where we sleep and eat. Great things about East Quad include, but are not limited to, The Halfway Inn, which serves delicious fried food on late nights and is a generally chill place to hang out with friends, especially during the winter. There is a possibility that this will be closed next year, but The Halfway Inn has also been known to transform into a concert venue on Friday and Saturday nights, bringing great local acts to your freaking dorm!!

East Quad also has a friendly feel, a nice courtyard where people are always found, two cozy lounges, and even an art gallery and small dance studio. You never get bored living in East Quad, RC student or not. Plus the location really is ace.

NOW, to set the record straight about the Residential College students whom you will be living near. You are getting the COMPLETELY wrong idea. Unless you, uh, don’t like people who happen to enjoy literature, foreign languages, and possibly the arts. But that is a ridiculous thing to hold against anyone, especially since to be honest, I was disappointed with the intellectual/weirdness level of RC students after hearing all these rumors before going there myself. Most RC students are normal as normal gets. Sometimes, in college, though, you meet people who DO challenge the norm, and the RC is only one of many spots at the University of Michigan where you will find such people. Also, I am WEIRD. You’re probably weird too. I do not know what you all consider weird (or why it is so awful), perhaps there is a fine line between weird and awesome. Plus, I have no idea who the pirate guy is, so clearly these stereotypically weirdos (who, in reality, I bet are way more fun than the bro’s and sorostitute crowd populating UofM), well, clearly the weirdo’s do not infiltrate or threaten that much if I was not even aware of a pirate roaming the halls.

It’s a big dorm, you can’t forget that. No matter which dorm you end up in at this school, there is going to be an overwhelming amount of people and lots of intimidation. People who are assigned to East Quad should feel lucky, therefore, that they at least ended up in a dorm with some sense of community. The RC students are in no way cut off from the non-RC’s, I made a lot of non-RC friends in EQ this year! So be thankful you aren’t in Markeley, now THAT’S a bummer. I say it’s better to have “weird” people than people who probably won’t notice you exist.

This is directed to anyone with negative, unfair feelings about the RC: If you are honestly going to be so judgemental of people from the onset, then you don’t belong in a college like University of Michigan, which prides itself on opening oneself up to new experiences and diversity.

There is WiFi in some spots of dorm. I was really lucky and got WiFi in my room, which was 2nd Hinsdale. Where is your room?
I am also pretty sure you get WiFi throughout most of the ground floor, like in the lounges. They are redoing some stuff with EQ this summer and adding WiFi throughout might be one of them, (crosses fingers).

About the RC Singers…they’re awesome! I don’t have a whole lot of info for you, but I had quite a few friends in it and they enjoyed it a lot. It also was not too demanding time-wise.

Also, if you have any questions about the RC/East Quad, feel free to ask me!

I don’t know much about East Quad, or any of the dorms, just know that many students rather not be on north campus.

True that! North campus is okay if you in Engineering and have classes close by, but I hear it is quite hellish for students having to take buses to and fro class all day…in the cold…

Hey guys, does anyone know anything about the Tyler House in the East Quad? I’m on the 2nd floor. Is it quiet, and are there sinks in the room? I have a single, so how about room size? Is it coed by floor?

Thanks.

I am an alumnus of the University of Michigan Residential College. The students I met in East Quad and the Residential College were brilliant, creative, out-of-the-box thinkers, and terrific students. It was one of the best experiences I could possibly imagine for college. Anyone who is fortunate enough to be a student at the Residential College will be in some of the most amazing courses on any college campus.
