one of the biggest things for me now that i've gotten over freaking out over whether or not i'd get accepted to gt is where to live! i'm so torn and i have no idea what to do. either side of campus seems like a good fit for me and i don't know what to choose. i like that west is newer and closer to the crc, which is important to me, but east is closer to the sorority houses and i intend to join a sorority, plus it's near freshman classes. my dad lived in towers when he was at gt like forever ago and he told me that he liked being near the football stadium and that east is a lot of fun to live on. i have no idea what to do!

help me!

and i know it's really early for this, but i want to have things figured out sooner rather than later to make things less stressful

If the only reason you want west is because it’s closer to the CRC, stick to east… from east it’s easier to walk home at night from (football game / sorority house / friend’s apartments at north ave) and the CRC is still a quick stinger ride away.

I’ve been living in east for a semester now.
East is closer to the football stadium. Good if you’re into football, but bad if you’re not since you can hear them even with the windows closed.
The food is ok. People say west is better, but I never tried west. From my friend who also spent a summer in west, it’s all about the same.
East is closer to the library. About 2~3 min walk. West is closer to CRC, about 5 min walk.
Classrooms are between east and west, so it doesn’t matter.
East has a freshmen experience thing. Frankly, it didn’t really help me settling into gatech.
East IS closer to greek houses. However, the stinger will get you there from west in about 6~8 min.
Personally, I’d rather live on west. But that’s only because I’m not into football and I’m not in a fraternity. Also, I don’t spend much time on library.
Oh, by the way… I think all east campus has community shower (with curtains). I don’t know about west.

Frankly, don’t worry about it. I applied to all west housing before applying to 2~3 west just to fill up the space and I still got east. All of my friends think it doesn’t matter where you apply for, they’ll just put you in where they want you to be.

I currently live on East. As someone who spends A LOT of time on the west side because my best friends live there, these are the pros and cons as I see them.

EAST. I barely use the freshman experience thing, but I know people who do. The dorms as smaller and the air conditioning is unreliable. Otherwise, the dorms are clean and comfortable enough. I know that Towers and Glenn (both all boy dorms) have showers with just curtains, but all the others have actual 3 enclosed sides and a curtain to close. I have never had a problem with the showers. I am currently in a COED dorm (Hanson) which I love. We are about 50/50 in terms of greek involvement. I’ve never had a problem with hearing noise from the stadium, but the games are mid day anyway so I don’t see how it is an issue. I am in a sorority so the proximity to the house and the Fraternities is really nice, especially when it is late. My west campus friends have trouble because the stingerette is extremely unreliable sometimes and they have been stranded on numerous occasions. Britian has ok food, but nothing special. They have better breakfast then Woody’s though. East is closer to Tech Square which has a Publix, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, Tin Drum, Moes, Waffle House, Rays Pizza, etc.

WEST. West campus is near the CRC so it is much easier to motivate yourself. (Of course, this is also a bus ride away). West campus dorms are larger with higher ceilings and are generally nicer. West campus also has a much less greek involvement ratio. West campus is also slightly farther from freshman classes, and the library. I do like spending time on west though because it is quieter at nights with less drunk people running around the dorms. Woody’s has better food. I love eating at Woody’s when I’m on West but maybe that’s just because it is a nice change. The buses don’t run on weekends though, so to get to East you have to walk. It is around a 20-25 minute walk.

You can eat at either dining halls no matter where you live. Chances are if you join a sorority though you will eat at the house and just have social 75 meal plan. I think only one sorority does not have a meal plan. This mean that you will rarely eat at the dining halls anyway.

Not all fraternities have meal plans (though most do now). Also, the last time I discussed this with someone at IFC in the know, it sounded like most fraternities do not require freshman to join their meal plan (because it’s assumed that the freshman have FE meal plans that they already purchased before pledging).

@BanjoHitter. This is true, I was just using the sororities as an example because the op mentioned about joining one. I know not all fraternities have meal plans and you are not required to join them. If you do switch to social 75 though, you get refunded the differences of your original meal plan. Most of the fraternity guys I do know though eat at their houses and have social 75.
