Easy/Good Teachers for Econ Courses

Anybody recommend any teachers for the following classes:

Econ 1

Econ 2

Econ 11

Econ 41

I need to find out who to take next quarter! Thanks :]

Unfortunately we're all stuck with Prof Hou for Econ 2 He's the only Econ 2 professor. :[

Is he a good teacher? :T

No. From what I've read and heard, he talks incessantly about his wife and how he's underpaid.

There's also only one Econ 1 professor (supposedly much better)

I have heard nothing positive about Prof. Hou.

I have Perrigne for Econ 41, and she's never taught at UCLA before from what I can gather. She has an extremely thick French accent and she's very hard to understand, and she spends ten minutes explaining self-explanatory things. (For instance, she will point to various cells within a chart and say what they signify--"This is the number of women. This is the number of men." Really!) She gives herself away as unprepared and disorganized, messing up a lot in the middle of problems...

But then again the exams are open book and open note. Haven't had an exam yet so I really don't know what it's like. I stopped going to lecture because all she does is read straight off her slides (without explaining anything really), and she posts the slides online. In fact I feel like it's better not going to lecture because I felt like I was doing worse than not learning anything by going.

I'm taking Econ 11 with McDevitt right now and his lectures straight after Perrigne's were like music to my ears (that is, when I actually went to Econ 41) because he explains things wonderfully. The class isn't easy or anything but I like it so much better...

McDevitt is probably the best econ professor you can get. That's not to say that the econ department is so horrible that McDevitt is good, but McDevitt is really good. That and I don't really like all the other econ teachers that much.

I'd say he's fair. His tests are like his practice problems + some twists. But he explains things very well and makes the subject seem easier while other teachers make it seem very difficult.

I had Kyriazidou for Econ 41, but I'm not sure if she is still around teaching. If she is, her 41 class was very easy. Her scores on Bruinwalk are atrocious though. She has like a 2 for care and nearly a 9 for difficulty. The tests are straight forward and they are not really difficult. The final was just long, and I bet some people didnt finish. Easy A. Don't know if she is still around though.

I have heard Bresnock is not as bad as Hou. Does that work?

dang.....I'm scared of Hou now after reading up on him on Bruinwalk...

so the only teacher for econ 2 is Hou and only teacher for econ 1 is Bresnock?

summary:

Econ 1 - Bresnock
Econ 2 - Hou
Econ 11 - McDevitt
Econ 41 - Kyriazidou (if she's still around)

Econ 1 - you have no choice
Econ 2 - you have no choice
Econ 11 - McDevitt or Hellwig
Econ 41 - they pretty much are all bad

^ :( :( :(

man...wth....how am i supposed to decide if econ's right for me if all these teachers are crap....

AWIOEFIAJWEIOWA

Prof. Hellwig is the best Economics professor I've had so far. Also, he curved to a B when I took Econ 11, as opposed to a B/B-, which is a perk for those Business Economics hopefuls.

I agree that Kyriazidou is probably best for Econ 41. Straightforward tests that are not difficult. McDevitt is really difficult; even though people say he's a good lecturer, I still had a hard time following his lectures (and there's no book to fall back on). I also despise multiple choice tests for microeconomics. It's discouraging when you do all this work for the problems on his midterms/final and then receive absolutely no credit because you didnt choose the correct letter.

Emphasis on easiest, not best teacher for Econ41. I'm sure her final was pretty difficult because of time constraints. I finished, but I didn't have any time to check anything. I somehow got a 93 or 94 on the final. It could have easily been a 70% with careless mistakes. I remember going to her office hours and hearing people say "Woah, he got a 93/94 on the final" when I asked for my grade on the final.

I'd have to agree with thecheesecake about the multi choice. It wouldn't be so bad, but I think 40% of the test is multiple choice. It's not even possible to guess when he puts like 12 possible choices. I remember I would have had a solid A without a curve but because I miseed two multiple choice questions, I got practically a C (without curve).

It's weird though because I had a fairly easy time following his lectures, but I guess that really depends on the person.
