Econ 001 601 or Math 103 601?

At my school I can only take AP Lit with no Calculus (regular, not AP), or English Honors with Calculus. I have only taken 1 AP class (AP Bio), but that is because my school offers only 2 (other one is music theory, staff picks students). This year they are adding Lit and Stat but if I take Stat I HAVE to take regular English instead of Honors or AP Lit. So would it be wiser to take English Honors and Calculus in school and take Intro to Microeconomics, a class I am sufficiently interested in or take the Intro to Calculus class? Is having an Econ class count as college credit better? Or an essentially AP Calc class that will be different and potentially harder (grade is more focused on exam and no calculators)?

EDIT: Forgot to add, I am not interested in taking Lit and I rather take English Honors, but I don't mind taking Lit for the lack of academic rigor (class conflicts is entirely my school's fault and I will be mentioning it on Common App, and I am also taking Physics at Community College in the spring, will mention it too) , plus I bet it would be college-focused the first few months anyway.

Hello?

@ThePariah Which school are you applying to? If CAS or Nursing, take which ever one you prefer. If Wharton (Wharton specifically recommends calc) or Penn Engineering, I’d suggest taking Calculus.

CAS, I’m still taking Calculus in school though. Would it be okay that I’m taking English Honors over AP Lit? I would only have taken 1 AP class. This upcoming year my school is offering 2 more, so wouldn’t it look bad if I’m not taking any? This is what I’m REALLY worried about…I sure can explain it on Common App and to my counselor, but…

No need for you to explain it. You should let your counselor explain it instead. I doubt it will be held against since your schools offers a limited amount of AP, and there will always be conflicting classes.

So just explain it to my counselor and she’ll add it to SSR? Yea well there always be conflicts, but AP Lit or Calculus? English Honors or AP Stat? That’s ridiculous, but I looked at the AP Lit exam, oh those poems, no thanks.

Keep in mind that at Penn in almost all cases you need a 5 on the AP exam to receive college credit.

Yeah I know that. I’m just a bit worried about my academic rigor. With the little choice I have, it still looks bad that I did not take AP Lit or Stat (I can’t but still) and someone else in my class who is also applying to Penn are taking those 2 AP classes.

But taking Econ allows me to decide earlier if I want to become an Econ major or not.

Why dont you take online classes for econ? MIT OCW, Coursera, YouTube… If you are so concerned, just take the AP class.

But I rather take Econ at Penn because I applied to take a class there for free.

I think that you just need to be sure that your counselor understands your concerns and let your counselor make it clear to colleges you are applying to.

Yeah of course
I took the first class for Econ today and it’s great lol.
