Econ/Math or Econ w/ a math minor from an employer standpoint

If I am trying to get into the quantitative fields of economics will a double major in math be worth the extra effort. I may be able to graduate on time. Yes, I am interested in math, otherwise I would not minor in it.

“worth it” in what sense?

If you want a good job, the math major will definitely be a good boost.

If you’re aiming for grad school, perhaps a math minor might be in order unless you truly can handle the work and preserve your GPA.

As someone who used to work in business and hired people, to be quite honest, what your degree is in (or if it’s double) really doesn’t matter. I personally hired based off of experience. (Hell I had no degree). Work experience trumps degree anytime. I feel that some people are tricked into thinking that if they get a certain degree then getting a job will be no problem. I think you should worry more about interning then getting a double degree. Get a double degree only if you want it, don’t worry about how it looks.

I only quit my job to go back to school because i wanted to learn more about sociology. i am very well aware that it won’t help me (nor do i need it) to further my career.

For your first job, it may help. But after that, employers will look at your work experience as opposed to what you did in school. If you graduated at the top of your class and double majored (or whatever you’re thinking), yet you messed up big time at your latest job and got fired, the new employer who is thinking about hiring you will look more closely at your latest job than your education.
