Economics for Leaders 2013

Did anyone else get accepted yet? I just got my Vanderbilt acceptance in the mail.
Do any past attendees have any suggestions whether I should take the additional course for college credit? It would be $204 to take the econ class and I'm not sure if it's worth it.
Let me know!

Our dd just got in at Vander. also.
My husband is all for the college credit for $200 so unless she really does not want to do it, she will be with you plugging away for the credit. Dh’s ‘sell’ will be that if she does it, no need to take AP micro econ. next year. Not sure it that is accurate. I too will be interested in responses regarding whether the credit is worth it.

Congratulations to you for getting in!

Curious as to whether other’s have applied or plan to apply. Also, can any past participants share whether the course credit aspect is worth it and what type(s) or extra work is required to get the credit?

Just wondering, did you guys get an email saying your application was received when you guys first submitted it?

I don’t think our child received an email confirmation…but I am not sure. I know that she emailed the organization a couple of weeks after she submitted her application and asked if they had received the application. They indicated that they had and that they were running a bit behind on decisions (if you applied early, decisions were to be released within a couple of weeks).
Then, her acceptance came via a large envelope in the mail, not via email. I think that she has until Feb. 15 to accept or decline and pay the $.

Thank you so much for that information!

My DD was recommended by her Economics teacher to participate in this program but she is only a sophomore. Has anyone ever heard of them making an exception and letting a sophomore participate? Thanks.

Hi, I applied before the early deadline so I was wondering if I should’ve received results by now?
Thanks

If you haven’t gotten it yet, I would email EFL.

anyone else get into the yale program yet?

I emailed them already, but they haven’t replied.
I guess the next step is to call them.

Were we supposed to receive confirmation email after submitting the application?

Hello,

Can someone briefly explain what this program consists in? I know they have different programs in different institutions, but what is their objective? And what role does the program take in college applications?

Thanks!

“The goal of the Economics for Leaders program is to give promising students the skills to be more effective leaders and to teach them how to employ economic analysis when considering difficult public policy choices…” From the Foundation for Econ (sponsoring organization) website.

Hopefully, some folks who have attended the program can speak to the reality of what goes on during the week.
As for college applications, our child’s counselor said that it goes in the big box of ‘summer experiences’ that show you were interested in learning and growing on your own time. Since you have to be selected to attend, it helps in that you had to compete on some level to get a spot.
It is not nearly as prestigious as Govenor’s School or something like that, but it is a base level leadership program with an academic and real world applicable bend to it.
Other aspect? Students tend to really enjoy their experience with this program.

Hi! I just received my acceptance for U.T. Austin (close by, yay!). Congrats to everyone who made it in, it sounds like it’ll be great.
For the objective: [Program Content and Topics](Program Content and Topics - Foundation For Teaching Economics)
As far as I know, this isn’t a top-tier program, but should show that you’re already taking interest in a possible major.
Cheers!

The ‘status’ of this program seems to be very unknown. There are kids with great stats who, in the past, did not get in. One parent speculated that PSAT scores have something to do with acceptance. Others think that it is for those who have not had a lot of exposure to economics, but clearly have ability to learn the topic.
Given the application, it is very hard to know how students are chosen. Somehow, they pull about 1/3 of the applicants and give them a slot.
A college counselor told us that it is a known program and has some level of selectivity, which is always a good thing. Most of all, student who have done it in the past tend to come back raving about how much they learned and how fun it was. That sold us.

Still wondering if any past participants can speak to what work is required to get teh 2hrs of college credit and if it was worth it
T

I got into Yale… Although for $1000, not sure if it is worth it. Can anyone advise?

I am a sophomore who applied before the deadline and I still have received any information regarding acceptance or rejection. What should I do?

Oh I think it is a great opportunity for you to go the Yale one. I have heard so many great things about this program. My teacher went to the teacher conference there and absolutely loved it! Good Luck! :)

Does anyone know how they send out admissions notices? Is it by mail or email? because it says on their website that it will come out at the end of march but I’mnot sure where to look for them

Our child got her acceptance by mail…a large packet.
