ED 2022 Deferral

Seems like there are a couple of us got deferred by Williams today, so I wanted to create a thread just for the deferrals

hello!

Any WOW students apply ED and get deferred?

My understanding is that deferred applications are still in the running, if your grades improve with the mid year report, that could make a difference, also, writing a letter about why Williams really is the best school for you and how you can impact the community could help a great deal. Persistence and passion for the school definitely will catch their attention. It is not over until the final class is set during the summer.

@TennisParent They specifically said you do not need to do anything else to ensure your application receives full consideration in the regular decision.

Yes, but I have heard about others being persistent to the point that they applied and were accepted as transfers.

Deferred along with you guys. Anyone know what deferral acceptance rates are like at Williams?

Ok, but there is the practice of sending a “Letter of Enthusiasm”, if Williams is the right fit for you or there some compelling reason why you should attend, you should feel free to let them know.

Can we submit any other supplemental material like another recommendation letter at this point?

JV, I really like your username but here your point is not well taken. Listen to @tennisparent! (But only if you want to improve your chances.)

@MisterMicawber @TennisParent Sorry for the salty response, was not in a good mood then. What would you recommend saying in such an email? Should I message the admissions office or regional admissions officer? I do not know my regional officer’s email, but will see if I can find it online. Also, my grades are down from first Q so that might not help… Thx for any advice!

@Jeanvaljean123 I think you can find all the admissions officers’ email on Williams admissions website, I once did around half year ago

@Jeanvaljean123 – Good for you for apologizing! Very much appreciated. It’s certainly understandable that you wouldn’t be feeling the best after the battering college application process. (And RD to come!) So in looking around for advice online about letters of enthusiasm, I stumbled on this from ■■■■■■■■, the thrust of which is to shell out lots of bucks for their services, but it makes a fwe good points in the process: https://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■/the-ivy-coach-blog/early-decision-early-action/power-great-letter-enthusiasm/

And this is OK as well: https://www.noodle.com/articles/10-steps-to-get-accepted-after-being-deferred-from-college

I have a feeling that better sources lurk out there waiting for you to dig them up. Good luck!

Thank you all for the advice! Im still a little confused, would an email to the local admissions officer suffice? The second link suggests a handwritten letter but that seems a little overboard, or would that be showing additional commitment?

The format does not seem to be important but a typed letter sounds appropriate. It should be heart felt and really express why your attendance at Williams will make such a difference for both you and Williams.

Actual tangible real physical letter. And sure, handwritten if your handwriting is legible. One of the articles also suggested phone calls first. You might glean something to follow up with in the letter.

Just a little update now that final decisions are in. My son was deferred ED and sent an email in late February to his admissions officer (he had no previous contact with her since we live overseas–looked her up online). He primarily detailed his improved grades and achievements from November-February, and how those intertwined with characteristics at Williams. He got in. Of course, I don’t know why, but I would recommend all deferred students make their case for their place at Williams.

Regarding method–he sent an email. No call and no letter. I think Williams is fine with that. He did receive an appreciative email in reply back in February.

Congrats!!!

Great news!! Just goes to show that being specific and reflective on how Williams will impact your future can make a difference.
