I know that apps went up by 10%. Did the acceptance rate drop by the much, or did Dartmouth decide to accept a few more in order to lower its RD acceptance rate and increase selectivity even more? From the threads, I see that the process was pretty brutal and emotional - as always.

Modadunn posted this link: Dartmouth News - Dartmouth admits 401 students through early decision - 12/11/08

Right after the Nov deadline, they put out that ED's were up 12.5%, but now it's only 9%. Honest mistake or inflated statistic? Still... brutal is accurate. But because the odds are so low, my S wasn't emotional. He's just a little ticked he has so much work in front of him in all these other applications. This is a kid who NEVER procrastinates and yet...

Dartmouth, like most, accepts the same percentage ED each year, it's philosophy based but also has to do with what percentage of recruited athletes and legacies they take overall as the vast majority of these come in ED.

The 12.5% was based on a flawed calculation by the D. They had the right number for how many applied Ed this year, but used the wrong number from last year. They quickly corrected the 12.5% to 10%. Then, the number decreased by about 20 or so, because there is always a few applicants who don't get in everything on time, or choose to with draw themselves from the ED pool and put themselves in the RD pool.
