ED acceptance - withdraw from other schools.

I got into Rice ED, and I recently received a letter from them telling me to withdraw from all the schools that I applied to. I withdrew from all my schools (which was a complete pain) but I was just wondering what happens if kids don't withdraw from the other schools they apply to? Is there really any way that Rice would find out about it, and if so, what would happen seeings as how ED has already made us pay a $400 deposit.

Set aside for the moment that you signed an agreement to withdraw all other apps should you be accepted to Rice, and that signature should have been enough. I wonder what Rice would think if they heard you whine about this.
Consider also that if you ARE admitted to other schools that you have bumped out someone else who wanted that spot.
Also consider that some Rice ED applicants may wait and compare financial aid offers from those other schools and then withdraw from Rice if they get a better financial aid package elsewhere.

There are many reasons to follow the rules that YOU signed onto when you wanted to get into Rice. There are no good reasons to not keep your word on this.

RiceFan–you’re overreacting. The OP stated that he/she has already done what’s required and is simply asking what seems (to me) like a perfectly good question. Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to it, but I’m assuming someone does.

Since you are allowed to walk away from the ED agreement if the FA package doesn’t cover you, if you withdraw all other apps now, aren’t you killing your chances for a good backup if your ED fails to deliver the needed FA? Of course, if you had signed an agreement with Rice to withdraw your other apps the moment you are accepted, then you will have to honor that. My question is really just a general one.

But isn’t that very rare? The Columbia website says that only three-four people every year actually withdraw from an ED acceptance due to finances.

Not withdrawing other applications after an ED acceptance is pretty risky and can result in rescindance of admission. I’m not sure how schools can find out about this, though.

Also, I’d like to add that Rice is an amazing school for need-based financial aid, so I don’t think ED applicants there would have to worry if they had significant financial need. This is just my opinion, but I’d say it’d be even more rare to withdraw from Rice ED because of finances than at schools like Columbia, just because of how great Rice is with this kind of stuff.

@RiceFan. I was merely just asking a valid question. I did withdraw from all of my schools already, I was just wondering out of curiosity what would happen. There is no need to assume that I don’t want to attend Rice, because obviously I do, or otherwise I wouldn’t have applied ED…

And Rice was not so great to my friend and I for financial aid…we both got $0.00. On the other hand, one of my friends who goes to an extremely elite private school in Houston, is super loaded, and Venezuelan, got $15,000 in aid. I’m not going to lie, I was very peeved about this considering both me and my friend go to a public school in middle class Houston and received nothing.

Now I just have to complete every scholarship imaginable, but none the less, I am still very excited about attending Rice in the Fall!! :)
