ED Admission

So what's the consensus on ED? Does it actually help your admissions, like at some other notable colleges? (e.g. Cornell, Vanderbilt, etc).

ED kinda of helps your admissions.
It’s more the case that like you’re going to be a qualified person if you want to go somewhere so badly that you apply ED.

The % of accepted for ED is also higher since such candidates are more qualified.

That’s what admissions officers have said but I still think applying anywhere ED still increases your chances a little bit.

Yes, at 95% of the schools it does, and at some schools quite significantly. But at HYMPS (or whatever), it doesn’t really help that much.

HPYMS. haha gotta remember the rank off of US World News Report (or whatever) :]

ED helps a lot actually. Your chances outside ED is about 25% while for ED it increases to 30% (the admissions office advertises this also).

And if you are OOS it helps even more because ED is to fill up OOS spots

Okay, sounds good…the more I look at Rice, the more I love…so I may very well end up applying there ED. How significant in admissions is freshman year? I have an extremely strong upward trend, but my freshman year is seriously lacking…mostly B’s. I honestly really don’t know what went wrong, but it brings me down from like top 5 in the grade to around 15th (still top 10% though), and from a 4.3ish gpa to a 4.1ish gpa. Basically, without my freshman year I’d say my chances are really good…so I’m hoping they would overlook it, but is that too much to ask?

Strong upward trends are good… (obviously). I wouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s not like you failed every other class. Straight B’s on the lower part of an upward trend is okay.

if you have a bad freshman year, but a great upward trend, and your overall GPA is very solid.

Makes you look that much stronger
