Congrats to everyone who got into WashU ED!!! I am a freshman at WashU currently, and you all have made a great choice picking WashU as the place you want to spend your next four years. WashU fosters such a warm learning environment with no competition–something that many other universities cannot say. Everyone here is so devoted to learning, improving themselves, and having a great time.
As for the people who got rejected or deferred, don’t let this get you down. When I was a senior, I also got rejected by my ED school. I was devasted. But honestly, in the end everyone ends up at the right school. Take a few days to reflect and feel sad–I know I did–but then get right back up, finish your RD applications, and wait until the spring!!
@ricecream I wonder if that means that they just haven’t finished preparing a financial aid packet for you yet? Did you complete the WashU financial aid family profile form?
@rhymetime Yes, in my Checklist, it says, “At this time, your application for need-based financial assistance is complete.” I looked back at the Common App and I definitely said that I am pursuing need-based financial aid.
My daughter was turned down. Had she applied with similar credentials five years ago, she would have made it. The only solace is you don’t know what the competition was until after the fact. What troubles us about the process is that it seemed that WashU was almost begging her to apply — she received more mail from WashU than almost any other school, along with untold numbers of emails, so getting turned down after receiving all that prompting seems, well, odd.
@mrdilettante I agree with your comments about about all the correspondence from schools maybe creating a false impression of strong interest, but would add it is not limited to WashU. Our original list of schools was pretty big and included Notre Dame, Penn, Vandy, Rice, and others and once we registered as interested candidates we got an onslaught of stuff from all of them. I don’t think I’d have gotten into many of them - I think they just send stuff to anyone interested who meets minimum criteria.
I’m sure other schools do the same thing — none of the schools you mention were on her list. Doesn’t make it a good practice. My daughter would have been spared a significant amount of heartache if WashU had been more, well, circumspect about her chances. Some other school will see the value she brings and she’ll excel, just as she always has.
So I understand that the Facebook group each year is an official page, but I’m assuming GroupMes from year to year are student made. Opinions on setting one up? It’d be nice to get to talk to some other accepted students early on!
Correct, GroupMes are set up by students. Of course be careful of what you post as there was a controversy on one of the Class of 2021 GroupMe pages.
There will be 2 FB pages. There is already a Class of 2022 page up on FB which is the unofficial one. If you don’t mind ending up on a mailing list, you can find helpful information. For some reason my son got added to that page even though he’s Class of 2021. The official one set up by the school will have the same content without people trying to sell you stuff.
The facebook group that exists already is not official, it will be relentlessly spammed by advertisers. At some point, the First Year Center at WashU will create one, probably called “Official Washington University in St. Louis Class of 2022” and you should join that one! GroupMe groups are student run and usually coordinated in the Facebook group.
@nathancard, how are you doing at WashU? We have enjoyed your videos and commentary! My D was deferred, but she will be fine. Everything is on the table! Wishing you all the best!
Congratulations to all those that got in. I can only hope that my son and the rest of you love WU as much as I did. Not only did I get an excellent education, but I had the prefect well rounded college experience. with lots laughs and great friends If I could do it all over, I would choose WU again.
Hi! Thank you for taking time to answer questions! I’m wondering if there are a lot of BME students who are interested in going to medical school, possibly. If so, are they welcome to take the Pre-med survey course that includes a semester doing rotations at the Barnes Jewish ER?
@Womama there are a few BME students that are doing pre-med but the schedule is killer. My son’s lab partner for Gen Chem is BME and premed and he has a pretty intense classload.
The med survey course is open to anyone with an interest in medical school. The shadowing at Barnes-Jewish is for sophomores and above although the first class is open to all levels.
