I read that one can apply ED without the SAT II's although they must be completed by January. These test results would then be used to further evaluate a deferred ED candidate. I already have one SAT II (Chem 750). I am planning to take two additional ones in October which will just make the 11/01 ED deadline. However, would they help or hurt my application?

Early Decision

If you have selected Dartmouth as a clear first choice, you may request an Early Decision on your application. Applying as an Early Decision candidate involves a commitment to matriculate at Dartmouth if admitted; candidates who are admitted under the Early Decision Plan may not initiate new applications and must withdraw any other applications. It is a violation of the plan for you to be an Early Decision candidate at two institutions at the same time. Early Decision applications are judged according to the same criteria as those in regular decision. Often senior year grades and scores do not reach us in time to affect the Early Decision process. In such cases, school records and testing through the junior year are used.

You may apply for Early Decision even if you have not yet taken two SAT II: Subject Tests. You must, however, take two SAT II's no later than January of your senior year. These test results will be used in further evaluating the applications of deferred Early Decision applicants and for academic placement of accepted candidates.

November 1 is the application deadline for Early Decision candidates. By mid-December, you will be notified that they have been accepted, denied, or that a final decision has been deferred until mid-April. If your application has been deferred or denied, you are no longer bound by Dartmouth's Early Decision agreement and are advised to continue with your applications at other colleges and universities.

To me it sounds like if you don't have all of your stuff in for ED you are going to be automatically deferred to the RD pool. It seems like it is in your best interest to have all of your stuff in so that you can be evaluated and have a decision by mid December.

I don't see why they would say you can apply ED if they planned to defer you. What would be the point of applying ED????

To be in the early deferred pool rather than the normal pool. I think....

they dont plan to defer u if u apply ED w/o the SAT2, i guess if u hav amazing stats etc, they will accept u even if u dont hav the required two SAT2, and if they defer u, they will then want to see ur midterm,SAT2 etc grades n make a decision, noeing tht u had a strong interest in the school since u EDed.

Also, if you are a highly sought candidate ex. developmental admit, recruited athlete -the development office or your prospective coach has probably already made the admissions office aware of your intent to apply ED. IF your a;ication can stand on its own w/o the SAT IIs you would most likely still be admitted an your SAT II will be used for placement purposes.

So, would it hurt to not have it?

Personally, I am retaking my SAT Is in Oct and SAT IIs in Nov. I'm planning on sending in my SAT IIs when I take them. My current SAT IIs suck because I didn't know you cant pick and choose which ones colleges see, so I don't want to send them in until I've retaken Math IIC (something I shouldn't have taken in the first place) and taken Literature.

How bad is it going to hurt me if I have stellar scores (740 avg) on SAT Is, a strong GPA (4.1 weighted), good ECs and top 4% class rank?
