I am pretty much done with the common app., however, I have yet to complete/choose a topic to write about for the "Elaborate on one of your activities" essays. I am the founder and editor-in-chief of the literary magazine at my school, but I know that there are many other applicants who do the same/have the same record. To stand out I was considering writing about my time working with Senator Liz Krueger during my junior year. I participated in a program called the "Youth Civics Project." I helped Liz educate other students about state government in the area (I live in NYC), and learned a lot about the differences between theory and practice of lawmaking. I also participated in a mock senate debate. What do you guys think of elaborating upon this? The only thing I am concerned with is the fact that I only participated in the activity during my junior year... Also, I am considering going pre-med, pre-law, or majoring in communications. Would this look inconsistent with the rest of my application? (Since I did start the Lit. Mag at my school, and am an active member of my school's newspaper?) Or should I write about my internship at Lighthouse International where I worked as a clerical assistant for the Head of Financial Planning.... Let me know your thoughts... Thanks...

I would write about the activity you love the most. Your enthusiasm will shine through. It isn't the activity that matters: it is YOU. Whatever you write should let them get to know who you are. College applicants are bound to have activities that fall into common categories. It is your job to differentiate yourself through personal qualities, not simply through the uniqueness of your EC.
