My son received a letter stating that he is a semifinalist for the Elite Scholarship, which would be a second scholarship for him that I understand he can “stack” with his first one (NM Presidential.)

There is a reference in the letter about attending Presidential Scholars Day in order for him to interview…I assume an in-person interview is required for this very competitive scholarship. I have read some other threads on this forum which explain the application/interview process for this, and the odds of his actually receiving it don’t sound too great.

My question is, does Auburn pay travel expenses for the kids who fly in to attend Scholars Day and interview for this?

Yes, the Elite’s are very competitive. Last year they named 250 semi-finalists and then 14 finalists and four alternates were chosen. My daughter was named an alternate, but all 14 finalists did go to interview. I don’t believe Auburn pays for your travel expenses.

Auburn pays for you travel expenses if you are a finalist. My boyfriend is a current freshman elite scholar, and he had hotel/travel/etc. paid for during his interview. If you’re really in need of scholarships, it’s worth a try!

^^Good info, thanks. Maybe I’ll have him take a second look at that application.

I just really hated to add to his pile of work right now if we are expected to buy a plane ticket for him to go interview, which we are not willing to do. Auburn did not make this clear in the letter.

Always, thanks for clarifying that. You are right, we had our flight and hotel booked before we received notice of the Elite interviews, but they would have reimbursed us. If your boyfriend wouldn’t have interviewed, my daughter would have had a chance. Congrats to him, but why didn’t he go to Harvard or something-LOL?

LOL, good question haha. He applied to Yale and got wait-listed, and he decided in the end that he’d much rather have the college experience he wanted with his expenses paid, than struggling with debt post-undergrad. He’s in pre-med, and now he has a great chunk saved up for med school. He’s definitely enjoyed the Auburn experience :)
