Email Address

Guys, this might sound dumb, but I still haven't picked my cal email address, which means I still can't see my financial aid. It's something I'll have to keep for the rest of my life, as it says, so I'm over thinking it. I can't decide between
first initial.last name@berkeley.edu or first name.last name@berkeley.edu. I like the idea of having my whole name in it, but my name is kind of long (first name 6 characters, last name 9) so maybe that's too long for people to want to type. So if you could help me with this that would be great. I know it's a bit obsessive, but in a way it's kind of important. Thanks!

Is your last name uncommon? If so, I suggest first initial.last name. 15 characters for first name.last name is very long. It’s easy for someone to misspell the address. Losing communication would suck especially if it involves opportunities.

Yes, my last name is very uncommon. I don’t have to worry about anyone outside of my family having it. I think I will probably go with what you said, thanks. Do you have any other ideas I could try? I don’t know why this is such a hard decision for me.

Which one do you think is more asthetically pleasing?

@oongaboonga‌
It’s hard, because I’ve always liked my first name…But I mean once you put in the @berkeley part, that would be like 29 characters, which I think is kind of long…It just looks like of confusing that way. Here is a name that looks similar (although my last name is much less common). Tell me what you think:

charles.jefferson@berkeley.edu

c.jefferson@berkeley.edu

I just stayed with my regular Yahoo E-Mail address for my UCLA e-mail. I guess, it will automatically be forward to it. Why not just use your regular yahoo, gmail or whatever you use as your e-mail address?

Have you selected yet? I do like the former. It looks clean and professional. Now I regret not having a period in between my first and last name.

Jefferson.C@berkeley.edu exudes class.

I approve of what @Zalrons has said.

Classy.

Then again, all email addresses with “@berkeley.edu” in it is pretty damn classy.

@cayton, very true!

@Zalrons‌

But I’ll take a @ucla.edu address any day over that one, which I have. :D

Where do you create the Cal email?

@‌ocnative

When you go to look at financial aid, it says you have to create a Cal net ID first, which becomes your email address.

Is the email address really that important? Is it alright if I didn’t follow the format and also included a number? Anyone know how to connect the email to mobile phone?

@goodjobdaveman‌

You can do whatever you want, but remember you can never change it. You want it to look professional if you’re going to be using it to contact people in your field and stuff like that.

Thank you guys for helping me. I still have not decided, but I will soon.

I have a very long and rare last name and a common first name. so what i did for my ucla email i used like the first half of my last name and then ended it with my first initial, and it sounds nice since my first initial is A. short and recognizable :D

Just a question about email address. I decided to keep my Yahoo Email, instead of going with a UCLA@.edu type. I am wondering, if I can still make a UCLA email address. I still want to use Yahoo to get my emails from the school, but I was told, the best thing to do when email professors is to use your ucla@.edu. I tried to find the site where I decided to keep my Yahoo instead of going to a@ucla, any clue where this is?

Question: How bad is it, if I just used my general username for everything?

@campfireweekend‌

You probably should’ve used your actual name for your school email address.

@cayton Probably. Oh well, too late
