I was originally just going to apply to A+S (only because my guidance counselor said to look at the school), and then I had a, what seemed like, a really good interview, and the admissions counselor told me to apply to the dual program with Newhouse and A+S as my first choice.

I'm not upset, just a little surprised.

Great rec, great extra-curriculars
Competitive private school where kids have been accepted this year with 2.8s and 24 on the ACT.

Waitlisted. Sort of funny how I've gotten in to all of my reaches but got waitlisted at my safety. I think they realized how many people with high SATs and/or GPAs use them as a safety, and they got sick of it. Perhaps they saw through the half-assed job I did on the app?

i think its like what someone said earlier, they just accepted a whole bunch of people without looking at all the apps, and they just got lazy at the end and waitlisted the rest

Wow, this does seem a bit strange, but do you really think that the Syracuse admissions office is so dumb as to admit all the kids from the early applications reviewed and WL or reject all the kids they looked at later? I mean, they HAVE done this before!!! I can't explain what happened, and feel bad for those who are disappointed, but perhaps there is a reason other than every single admissions officer is dumb...

alan i am shocked you were waitlisted. why would you even want to apply to syracuse anyway? just curious............you seem like almost ivy caliber. why not go for more serious schools, unless there was something particular you wanted there. Where else did you apply? A friend of mine, who I like but with all due respect did not try hard in school, got like a 1600/2400 sat and we don't do gpa but b's and c's got in to syracuse and that was her reach!

Alanstats, from what I can tell, Syracuse is tired of being second fiddle to other colleges. They seem to have adopted the Tufts Syndrome in that if you are a very highly qualified kid who will probably be accepted at other top schools, they assume that you are using them as a safety. Thus, they tend not to accept these types of kids. I guess if you were really serious and noted this in phone calls and in your application, I think you would have substantially raised your chances.

taxguy, You may be right, but there are many others on this board that did not have 1500+ on the sat, but were very well qualified and got waitlisted. I think that they really had way too many apps this year. My son was waitlisted at SU, and accepted, for example, at Northeastern with a substantial scholarship. Northeastern is another school with way too many apps this year. I really think that for both of these schools, one had to be plain lucky, as well as having the qualifications. Many kids with much lower stats were admitted into Syracuse than those with higher stats, and they were not all using SU as safety (I realize that college within the U. counts, but I am considering that). My son, visited, interviewed, showed interest, SU was a match schoool, and it did not work out.

kellyconn. really now. i really like syracuse and i really wanna go there. i think its a great school. dont talk about it like its a crap school.

Like Northeastmom"s son, my daughter also visited, interviewed and showed interest. It was not looked at as a safety. I have to agree that they probably got way too many apps, accepted their class and didn't give those on the bottom of the app pile the consideration that they should have. My D not only got into comparable schools, but she got very nice merit money. I don't know if we will ever have an explanation, but I feel for those who had the stats, were waitlisted and Syracuse was their first choice.

It's not just Syracuse. This is from the boston University board where the same thing is happening:

WAITLISTED...

How is that f'in possible it makes me so angry...

I have like a bazillion schools that I got into that are 100 times better than BU but I get waitlisted by one school that I didn't care about? aaah.

I actually declined their waitlist because it made me so ****ed off and I won't go their anyways even if I did get in.

Yea, well my gpa isn't really high enough for Ivy type schools, and my 3.35 unweighted is a bit of a downward trend, but I thought my SAT would get me in; it has everywhere else. The reason I applied to Syracuse is I have legacies coming out the wazoo, parents, aunts etc. I figured I'd apply for the heck of it. That just makes it more bizarre that they didn't accept me. It doesn't bother me in the least, but it certainly baffles me.

Taxguy: I see what you are saying but I did show interest in the school. In addition to legacies, I visited the school and met with my regional rep down here in Florida. I seriously believe they didn't bother to read my app.

I feel the pain of those who didn't get in. But remember, it isn't all about stats. This is a very subjective process. If it were just stats, they would start at the top and work down until they filled the need. But they are looking for good fit, not just good stats.
I don't know if there is a "Tufts Syndrom" or not. My daughter was admitted with high SAT and ACT scores and had one interview and one visit to campus. Why her and not others, I have no idea. But I would give the admissions folks a little more credit than to sugges they just took the first ones they saw.
And remember, you really don't know what your recs say. One admissions officer told our visiting group of horror stories aobut glowing written recommendations that came with post it notes saying that what was written was overstated but they didn't want ot hurt the students feelings. Ouch...you just never know. And geographic deiversity plays a role, ethnic diversity, how many kids from one school, etc. Very subjective and we never know the formula.

I also can't believe I was waitlisted. And not even to newhouse, to the department of communication/rehtoric studeies in performing arts school. Does anyone know how that is? I wasn't really sure, I just kind of threw it on there when I did the app. I had 2100 sats (780 writing), 90 GPA, great essay and recs. I was kind of shell-shocked.

They probably didn't think you would enroll. Syracuse doesn't admit applicants with very high statistics - I believe it's called "Tufts Syndrome (?)" because they want to protect their yield rate. This means they believe you're going to be admitted somewhere better than Syracuse and would enroll there. It happened to someone on this site last year and they got into Cornell.
