I just got accepted to Emerson and Syracuse and am very excited about both. However, I was accepted at Emerson as a Marketing Communications major and at Syracuse as a Communication and Rhetorical Studies major in the VPA college. I did put Newhouse as my first choice, but with my grades I was surprised I got in to Syracuse at all, but the problem is that I've heard that Comm & Rhetoric is very theory-based, while I'm more interested in the communication programs at Newhouse. My question is, is it worth it to go to Syracuse and risk not transferring into Newhouse, or should I go to Emerson and do a major that I'm more interested in?

Congratulations on your acceptances! My daughter was in exactly the same situation as you are 2 years ago so I felt compelled to respond to you. She chose Syracuse as a Communication and Rhetorical Studies major in VPA. She is now in Newhouse after having a high GPA. Now that she looks back she realizes that Syracuse itself was such a better choice for her than Emerson. She enjoys the NCAA sports, the Greek life, being with a variety of students (rather than being with students who have similiar interests in Communications/Performing Arts). If you choose Syracuse, there would be no guarantee that you would be able to transfer into Newhouse (it is all about how you do academically in VPA) - but I would advise that you think about what is important to you in the overall school too in addition to your major (which is important but not the only deciding factor)! Syracuse and Emerson are both excellent schools - but are different experiences depending on what you are looking for and what would fit you. Good luck with your decision.

Shamrockmom… My daughter was also accepted to vpa crs with hopes of transferring to newhouse for graphic design. Do you have any suggestions for her to increase her chances for transfer?

Mia… Congrats on your acceptances and good luck with your decision! If you decide to attend syracuse and want to meet someone else in the crs program, send me a pm and i’ll introduce you to my d. She will be at the 4/23 spring reception, do you plan on attending that?

Mia

You’re in exactly same situation as mine. I also accepted into that program in SU with hope to transfer into Newhouse. And I just got accepted letter from Emerson a couple day ago into my first choice.

Did you make any decision yet? give you don’t mind please PM me and we can talk and help each other to decide where should we go lol.

i’m also in the same situation with being accepted into VPA as a comm major compared to my first choice newhouse. what type of classes did your daughter take and how easy were they to get her GPA high enough to get into newhouse? also, at what point did she do it (2nd semester, soph. year, etc.)

I know of a girl who transferred to Newhouse from VPA and has loved every experience thus far. If I was in your position, I’d definitely pick Syracuse. Nothing compares to Newhouse! it’s truly worth a shot. If you want to know the specific GPA she had, I’d be glad to pass on her contact info, or at least ask her myself and share it with you. Best of luck!

Shamrockmom17–thank you so much for your thoughtful response!
weluvnik–I haven’t completely sorted that out yet, either the one on the 13th or the 23rd but when I figure it out I’ll contact you!
creamania–yeah that sounds great. Are you part of the facebook group?
stein 12–somebody should answer him/her, I’d love to know this too
elysehill99-if you could find out her GPA and everything that would be amazing, thank you :)

mia yes, I am a part of facebook groups.

Mia, are you waiting to hear from any other Universities with Comm. programs? Or is your final decision between Emerson and SU?

@urbanparent–I’ve also been accepted to Temple U, and I’m waiting on Ithaca, University of Oregon and Chapman

Mia, It sounds like you know what you want to study. There is no “guarantee” that you will get into Newhouse, although many students do transfer successfully. My son was accepted to Newhouse ED. He put a 2nd choice (CAS) but was clear he would have accepted somewhere else if rejected from Newhouse. He just did not want to chance it. His other applications were, Ithaca, Temple American and BU. Emerson is wonderful and a great choice. After hearing from all your apps what about going to an SU reception in April for accepted students and discussing it with someone in Newhouse? Good luck with your decision.

Mia: GPA for internal transfer runs from 3.5-3.6 depending on the year…and it doesn’t matter what school at SU you come from or what courses you take…

From what I have seen over the past 4 yrs, it is easier from VPA, human Ec than arts and scie…less competition for the transfer

Absolutely agree with Rodney about the easiest schools to transfer in from. By the way, my D has met some successful VPA graduates in the communication field. You can make it into a successful major.

Thank you to everyone who’s responded so far, it’s been so helpful. To all the parents, what do your kids think of Syracuse overall? Are you happy with the education they’re getting?

Im curious to know which you choose and why. My son got into Newhouse. He is interested in Journalism, but really dreams of working in film. We got some money, but it is still expensive. He also was accepted into Chapman (creative writing), Loyola Marymount (journalsim) and University of ORegon (journalism). We live in CA so the winters in Syr and the cost are daunting. He is having an incredibly tough time deciding; plus he is doing a rotary exchange in Belgium this year, so he can’t go visit the schools during class time. I kind of want him to come home early to go look at Syr. We are familiar with U of O (his sister goes there) and are really happy with it. Just don’t know if the end result of a private school with big name in Journalism is worth it or not. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
