Hey everyone... I'm new here to this forum, but definitely not new to the college application process! As a transfer, I applied to 4 schools; Syracuse, Hofstra, SUNY Oswego, and Emerson. I've been accepted so far to all but Emerson, and am still patiently waiting for Emerson! I know that the SI Newhouse School is very well known, very well respected, and an accredited school for communications and journalism, and absolutely love the idea of going there. Although, I can't shake the fact that it's still in Upstate (where I'm from) and that compared to Hofstra and Emerson, the internship opportunities seem quite small. While I'm not trying to jump the gun and assuming that I'm in at Emerson, can anybody here weigh the pros and cons between the three schools? If I do get into Emerson, I'm going to have a tough time choosing! Mind you, I still have not recieved any FA packages. Thanks for your help!

If it were me, I’d throw out Hofstra and SUNY Oswego, especially when being compared to Emerson and Syracuse. If it came down to Syracuse and Emerson you have to realize that Newhouse is incredible but you can’t beat Emerson’s internships, connections, and most importantly location/environment. I think they are both incredible schools for comm. and the arts so it really just comes down to what environment you will be happiest in. Good luck!

I would also be down to Syracuse & Emerson… I think a lot of it depends on the environment you’re looking for! Emerson’s right in the city, much smaller, with more of a focus on the communications and the arts. Syracuse is still pretty urban, but has more of a campus… although Newhouse is small and concentrated, you’re part of a much bigger community as a whole. And it is important if you’d rather be in NY or Boston!

Just curious, where/why are you transferring?

I did get my acceptance from Emerson yesterday… so I’m going back and forth between SU and Emerson. I got about 33K from SU, but still don’t know about the transfer of credits. According to my professors at my school now, historically they take very few credits, so I would be looking at another 3 years at SU as opposed to 2. I also won’t be receiving my FA package from Emerson until June. So it’s hard to decide whether i want to lose that deposit money to SU or just forget about it and go with what Emerson has to offer. I do love the internship possibilites at Emerson and in Boston, and I feel like with Newhouse, any good internship would be outside of Syracuse and I would have to go elsewhere for those.

I’m transferring because the school I’m at is only 2 years. Although, they have a great radio/television program so I got a great start. I go to Herkimer County Community College… very small school in upstate, SU is only about an hour west of me.
