Reflection:

Strengths: Course Rigor, GPA, while I didn’t have a bunch of ECs I showed that I was very dedicated to the few that I did Recs were also pretty good.
Weaknesses: Test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I took the most rigorous class’s available to me and maintained a high GPA with them. This was also complemented with good ECs.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to USF, UCF, and FSU

Really excited to become part of the the Emory community!!’ Can’t wait to meet you guys.

@GoEmoryEagles123 : Congratulations! Just wanted to ask for whether you are pre-health or whether you are more interested in doing science as a career (industry or grad. school/research)? It’s that there are ways that you can essentially “make” a biochem major since Emory doesn’t actually have one and the various options are more fluid (and just better in quality) if you didn’t have to watch or constantly worry about your GPA (as in maintain a quite high one that may scare you out of taking certain courses and instructors) throughout undergrad (as a pre-health would).

I actually know a guy now at Scripps Research Institute (he also got into MIT for chemisry) who did something very similar to what you list. He was a chemistry major that took select biology courses and graduate level chemistry courses and was also creative writing major or minor. He enjoyed the freedom of easily accessing those more rigorous instructors as it is where he got the best mentoring as he was trying to learn more about his research and prepare for graduate school.

Accepted!
SAT I (Math 630, Reading 710, Writing 720):
ACT : Too much of a hassle…
SAT II: French 800, Literature 680

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Yearbook (Editor-in-Chief), Student Council (VP), Prom Committee (Head), Writing Fellow (help younger kids in my school with their English writing)
Job/Work Experience: 'Fraid not.
Volunteer/Community service: Maybe 10 hours? Not much time.
Summer Activities: I watched all the seasons of Gilmore Girls for the first time, and rewatched 30 Rock!
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Written by my charismatic and (let’s face it) incredibly sexy history teacher. I think wrote about my reaction after a bike handle stabbed me in the leg during a school trip.
Teacher Rec #2: Written by my much less sexy but even sweeter math teacher. This guy used to teach in SF, so he actually knew how to write a recommendation letter for the US of A. #blessed
Counselor Rec: Yep, and I know nothing about it.
Additional Rec: Yearbook and Student Council Advisor.
Interview: The admissions guy came to our campus, and my ex and I were the only two to show up. My ex knew nothing about the school, so I just talked to the admissions guy for an hour, and it turned into an interview-like situation. Totally counts.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yep.
Intended Major: Um. Chemistry? German? Politics?
State): Used to be Mississippi
Country: France
School Type: OIB, French public school with 8 supplementary hours of English Lit and American History
Ethnicity: White/North African
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: My parents are professors.
Hooks: I’m off the hook.

Strengths: I don’t think I’m uncharismatic, I speak 3 languages fluently, I have a mixed background (American, French, German, Tunisian), my grades are pretty solid and I’ve stuck with my ECs for up to 6 years. Also a United Methodist.
Weaknesses: Pretty bad at sports and native-level French Literature.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because of my strengths, and weaknesses. I chose the failure prompt, and talked about perseverance.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

@bernie12 Thank you and yes I hope to pursue sciences as a career. I want to one day have a career in scientific research. While I am passionate about the sciences, I also love the humanities. I felt Emory was the best fit for me to pursue my goal of sciences and research while being able to continue my education of the humanities. Now just to make the difficult decision between Emory College and Oxford College!

@GoEmoryEagles123 That is tough and an interesting choice because I do believe that Oxford trains students better at the introductory level in the sciences and would provide a more intimate introduction to the humanities. You could start at main and select the best instructors for lecture components, but lab components are generally superior at Oxford. However, the caveat about pursuing something like biochemistry is that main will allow earlier access into research and superior teachers in organic chemistry for example (which is of course the foundation for biochemistry and molecular biology in general). I would honestly air on the side, for a research oriented person, to maybe go to main and choose the best instructors possible (which will be rigorous) for both science and non-science courses. The convenient thing about main is that, even for the humanities, the sense of community and intellectual life is strong simply because of the amount of well-known people on faculty who indeed attract other lecturers to campus and facilitate workshops, etc (especially in English and Creative Writing). If you were pre-med, I would just say, go purely with the best science instruction (which I think overall is at Oxford for first and second year courses) as access to research as early as possible is probably not as important as things like grades and volunteer opportunities. Main campus has a solid share of great instructors and courses for introductory and sophomore level science students ( if they desire it) along with easier access to research and bigger speaking events.

Though honestly, if you haven’t or have only once, may take a chance to visit both if you can and check out some top classrooms at both and scout the other opportunities to assist you in your decision. As a person interested in research, where you mainly begin to diverge from say, pre-healths, is when you start taking your advanced level biology and/or chemistry courses and most of these will likely be taken junior year regardless of where you start (though if you knock biology out as a freshman on main, all of the biology options will pretty much open up to you sophomore year and with respect to your interests, main’s biology offerings has a better range).

Has anybody gotten their letters in the mail yet?

@NeuroDude no I havent! And I live 40 minutes away…patience is hard

we get letters??? dang thats cool

@bigBoy2016 I am talking about like our Admit Packets.

Reflection:
Strengths: SAT II’s, Band EC’s
Weaknesses: GPA, no volunteer/summer work, very little leadership
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because of strong standardized test scores, because of ethnicity, because of band ECs
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: GSU, KSU
Rejected (so far): UGA (don’t ask because UGA was actually a backup if Emory rejected me and I was 99% sure that UGA would accept me)
Waiting on (because I did RD for these schools): Dartmouth, Columbia, USC, UC-Berk, and UPenn

@394emory2020 : Wait, do you plan on going to Emory? Also, UGA likely yield protected you or denied you because of GPA (most UGA kids somehow got 4.0+ weighted due to the grade inflation in Georgia). It has a hard time yielding students in your SAT and EC range, let alone URMs in that bracket. Private schools tend to take essays and stuff more into account if you have an otherwise strong academic record (but slightly blemished). UGA almost has a formula for example (some sort of score system).

Also, don’t know if reach colleges (Columbia and Penn I guess, maybe Dartmouth) will care much if you raise your scores that much. You’ll pretty much be riding on your essays, because any further mismatch in the GPA and SAT scores may annoy them.

@394emory2020 wait, aren’t you accepted under ED1? If so, you have to cancel your applications everywhere else ASAP

They probably just used ED1 to test the chances at an elite and ensure that they could have gotten into one. They may be able to pay the fee for breaking the contract. Basically, the idea is to get one (the most doable) school on lock and not take a risk applying for all of them RD.

@bernie12 isnt this unethical to do? And won’t breaking the ED1 agreement also cause blacklisting at other schools as well?

@394emory2020 You can’t keep those RD applications open. You must contact each of those colleges and withdraw your application. Read your ED contract. You are now an Emory student. Congrats!

Your stats (if what you posted are correct) make you easily identifiable. All a poster needs to do is copy your post and send it to Emory admissions. Should you choose not to honor your ED commitment, Emory can identify you from your post and contact your reach schools. You are playing a very risky game. Don’t do it. Withdraw all your other applications today.

@ismitah : I don’t know how it works and whether or not the other schools would be aware of their decisions elsewhere. As for the ethics…maybe, but students will do many things to game an extremely tough system of elite admissions now-a-days.

It’s not too hard to get out of if you applied for financial aid. My two friends said they couldn’t afford it (they really couldn’t) and canceled their applications. And @dreambig2018 chill out… Is what this student doing unethical? Yes, probably so, but would you really want him at Emory if he’s like that anyway? Not to mention, he didn’t say whether or not he had cancelled his application, so it’s possible that he couldn’t afford it and is seeing if another school will give him more generous aid.
