Emory Housing

I recommend a pad, but I don’t know about length. I was hardly in my room. I wouldn’t get in until like 4-5am and would have to wake at like 7-8am. As for kitchens w/toasters, I don’t think so.

Sidenote: I went into Complex on Saturday. They did an amazing job. It will be quite a treat for those Sophomores/RAs living in it.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by a good job on complex? What is it like now?

They completely changed the common areas and lounges. They all look more like something from Fevans or something. It appears that they’ll be adding whiteboards and stuff, to make some areas more studygroup oriented. The only unfortunate thing is that it appears that the small computer lab and gym are gone. However, there appears to be some sort of copy/print area in the “library”. The landscaping on the outside is a bit better too. The dorms were converted into suite style. Other than the loss of a couple of somewhat outdated and subpar amenities, it’s pretty solid.

As a transfer I would not opt for Clairmont. It seems that students move there after they are established in their friendships, organizations, etc. They are apartments so there is less interaction between units. As a new student, I would think you would do better in a dorm.

I’ll actually agree with you movinmom. I am personally able to make new friends at Clairmont, but that is because I am very social, and am willing to penetrate well-established cliques. If you find such an environment daunting, then Clairmont is not the place, as it is the epitome and solidification of such establishments. Most apartment assignments result from friends “pulling” each other in anyway. Given that, there is not much incentive to interact with new groups of people. And if you are new, it may be tough regardless of your social skills. Just go with a dorm. Also, I don’t think Complex went suite style (my friend’s hall doesn’t have it), but those lounges are really nice. You won’t necessarily have to go to the library to get a studyroom w/a whiteboard which is good (even though that isn’t a problem as Complex is right across the street).

Question, are there certain “cliques” more apparent at certain residence halls? I think I read somewhere in this forum that there seem to be more minorities at Harris Hall, and Dobbs is more social then most halls.

Actually, I don’t if you can “minorities” because ever reshall has an abundance of minorities, if that is defined as non-white (in fact, whites are essentially a minority here, especially non-Jewish whites). Harris is known for having more than a fair share of international students (Koreans in particular), and of course they tend to clique up. Other reshalls not so much, but I can certainly see dobbs as being the most social as it is smallest. However, I have seen really social hallways in Fevans and Longstreet-Means. Harris can also be kind of fun. Point is, any freshmen dorm will be more sociable than sophomore/upperclassmen dorms mainly b/c almost everyone is new to each other. I say cliques seem to start forming second semester freshmen year. I think you’ll be fine no matter what as even those who choose to clique up will generally interact with you if they did before. It becomes less sociable when more than 2 members of it can elect to live together in a place like Woodruff or Clairmont b/c they tend to stick to themselves more.

do students stay in their dorms a lot? also what is the part-time job scene at emory and its surrounding town like?

Hey, I’m an incoming Sophomore who is two months away from surviving Freshman year in a really crappy dorm (Trimble). My advice to all incoming Freshman is to DO THE FYE ESSAYS because if not you WILL be put in a subpar dorm. Emory is in the process of constructing this “Freshman Quad” (to be completed in like 2017), so for now, there are a bunch of pretty old dorms. Luckily all of them have A/C (if faulty) and Ethernet/Wireless. Unless you are part of an FYE program (which require essays and allegedly some programs after school starts, which I haven’t heard of anyone actually doing), you don’t get to choose your dorms.

NON FYE DORMS
Dobbs - Small rooms, great community, central campus. People usually bunk the beds because otherwise it’s almost impossible to fit the beds, the desks, and the people themselves. Avoid Dobbs by not choosing “Mixed gender floor”.

Harris - Dark, but the rooms are decently sized, with good closet space. Bunking the beds allows for even more space. Good location - right near the Cox food court and the library.

Trimble - 2011-2012 is its last year before demolition. Despite Google’s frightening results, the rats are gone (watch for roaches though). Good community, room sizes, and location, but kind of falling apart.

Mctyeire - Bigger rooms than Trimble, but pretty much the same. Open for maybe two more years than Trimble. Better lounges.

FYE DORMS
Few/Evans (Green Theme) - The best dorms on campus. You won’t hear the construction going on behind Trimble/Longstreet-Means/Mctyeire/Turman, and the entire place is fairly new and spotless. Right next to Frat Row and the WoodPEC.

Longstreet-Means (Global Cultures Theme) - A massive dorm that was built last year. Same room setup as Few/Evans/Turman, with some Suite-style rooms that share bathrooms with each other. I’ve heard people don’t know each other as much because the dorm is just so huge. It does have a fireplace, though!

Turman (Citizenship Theme) - A smaller dorm with a great community and decently sized rooms. Also very new. Right next to the DUC, so great location.

So there are all of the Freshman dorms. Don’t make the mistake of giving into Senioritis - it’s worth the time and effort to get into the better dorms. But for people who don’t do the essays, don’t be discouraged - there are perks about every dorm, and you won’t go into Sophomore year totally spoiled.

What exactly are the FYE essays?

Yeah how do I find out about this FYE? Sounds like it’s worth it to write a couple of essays but get best Freshman dorm.

Are the essays less than 200 words? Cuz i finished the survey monkey FYE dorm thing and it asked me to write a 200 word response why “Global Cultures” or other theme is right for me…

I never did an essay… am I screwed?

for essays i heard they weren’t due till may 1st or something like that…

I already did the survey thing though :/
