Emory RD Class of 2022

@VANDEMORY1342 @bernie12 Any sense for whether being asked for an Arts/Music/Dance Supplement actually increases ones admissions chances for Emory? The request states definitively that being asked for a supplement should not be interpreted as a guarantee of admission, but I have to think it sure can’t hurt?

Any chance you have a gut sense one way or the other?

@GeronimoAlpaca : Emory is one of the few schools in its tier that puts talent and recommendations in the top bracket of admissions considerations (I believe the listing here: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/emory-university is a good approximation) and actually has standardized testing as a bit lower. They are looking for talent and indicators of unusually high academic or EC engagement or passion for something. A supplement helps convey that. It may not do much, but it could express an interest and help the adcoms evaluate you better and explore the places where you could fit into the Emory picture (so if you show talent or high potential, they know for sure that you can add to the scene at Emory in that way). Definitely cannot hurt. If you have anything, I would send it.

@bernie12 Thank you for your insights.

@GeronimoAlpaca
I think it just gives a better picture of who you are, and I think they send that to all the applicants. Are you being recruited for the musical department.

General Comments: I’m a little nervous about Emory RD b/c I loved Emory when I visited, but I don’t think anything in particular stands out.

@collegeplz2018
Your EC’s are very good, however they don’t seem focused. I wonder why your weighted GPA is so low since your UW GPA is very good. Your ACT/SAT is avg for RD.
Emory- Low Reach
UNC (EA)- Reach
WashU (RD)- Reach
URochester (RD)- High Match
Boston University (RD)- High Match
Northwestern (RD)- Reach
Cornell (RD)- Reach
Yale (RD, legacy)- Low Reach/ Reach
Brown (RD)- Reach

@VANDEMORY1342 : That is not a low UW GPA. It only is if her courses and her school were very easy (hint: maybe if she was from Georgia, Florida, or California, places where publics, even some good ones, are known for crazy inflation or relative ease to gifted students)…If the student is correct and they are somewhere between the top decile and top quintile, then it maybe makes sense. I personally would not expect to see a anything like 95/100 or higher for an unweighted GPA. That basically means that the coursework taken is completely unchallenging. I would be suspicious if anyone coming from a school where they are in the top decile or a little lower with that numerical GPA. The real question is what is the “academic GPA” when you remove all the joke electives and requirements. A freaking 93 UW likely puts someone anywhere between 3.7 and 4.0 UW with a bias towards 4.0, especially if A+s (which would be a 96 or 97, something like that) are weighted differently. It depends on the distribution of courses giving her those grades I guess, but if they have mostly As (93-95), a spread of A- grades (low 90 to 92.whatever), a couple of B+s and A+s, that makes sense and a 93 therefore is a super strong unweighted performance. The bump to 97 is likely explained by the balance of APs vs. honors or whatever else. For a decently rigorous school, the GPA makes sense to me.

Can’t say anything about scholars chances, but for the purpose of admissions, if an abundance of solid As is getting them to 93, they are in good shape I think.

You have been in college long enough to know this. Seriously, what types of work did you receive in courses where most people would have above a 93/100 (or even 90), or especially a 95+ for the final course grade? Yes Emory students are very smart, but we all know such courses are comparative jokes and that one’s more rigorous HS courses were likely tougher and would yield lower pre-weighted averages for most (and many take these courses with more than 3-4 other courses. In college, we often pre-select classes with GPA control in mind along with degree progress. In HS, if you want to get into any selective college, there is much less of a choice in that regards). Consider this, in a class like general chemistry at Emory, often the B+ is the top quartile. Bet that A- starts at more like the top decile (the 90) or 12% and this is when lab is taken into account (so shift lower if lecture and lab were separate). In organic chemistry, maybe 16-20% get any sort of an A and this only after they curve the raw scores. If students were to have raw scores out of 100 put on a transcript, some of the A grades may equate to high 70 or low 80s. Point is, in more challenging classes (even in social sciences), there won’t be loads of people over a 90 or even 93. Can you imagine people who were lied to and told they were challenged in HS while earning a 95/100 UW GPA coming to this environment? Considering Emory’s enrolled average is like 3.72 and the admitted range is: 3.75 - 3.98

For reference: A friend from Gwinnett Math and Science just told me how he was near the top 5% of his class with something between UW of maybe 93 or so and that is considered a very challenging curriculum. A 93 plus top decile suggests “moderately challenging” I believe depending on the selection at the school (mind you Gwinnett MathSci has heavy selection inward and still has that). Unless the students at the school were heavily pre-selected AND the school did not have a STEM focus, I wouldn’t expect much higher for that ranking predicted by this poster. I would avoid recruiting at such a school barring exceptionally talented students (based upon ECs, other tests, and stuff).

@collegeplz2018

I would say you’re a match for Emory/Oxford.

Emory/Oxford’s research for credit program for qualifying students that is undertaking an ongoing breast cancer research project. The students who have worked on that project have done well for themselves. The student head of the project was able to get a summer research internship last summer with MIT’s Broad Institute doing research on cancer using CRISPR gene editing techniques.

The fact that you have an interest in this area and might continue the work will be a plus in my view.

Your essays will be very important, particularly as to whether you’d be a fit for Emory Oxford’s campus culture.

Did you specify Oxford Scholars when you applied for that scholarship?

Sorry, I have no idea why it reposted twice.

@bernie12 @VANDEMORY1342 Thanks for your insight. My school doesn’t seem to weight AP/honors courses as heavily as other schools, which is why there isn’t a huge difference between my UW and weighted.

@BiffBrown That sounds interesting. Do you know where I can find more info on that project?

Can someone chance me for Emory/Oxford Scholars RD please?

General Comments: I’m worried I don’t have enough sole community service included in my application, but it is an integral part of both BBYO and NHS, which might help my case. This is my top school and I’m not sure I can even get in regular, but someone with less qualifications got in EDI this year already. Also, a lot of other people are applying RD alongside me from my school.

My dad has a mutual friend with the Provost of Emory and is trying to use that to help set up a call with me with him. Would that help?

@pw11559
I really think Emory Scholars is almost Out of Reach, But I think because of your associations that you are a High Match/ low Reach for acceptance. What does your school’s Naviance say? What was the student that got in ED stats?

@pw11559 : Note that it isn’t your stats that make you unlikely (but can still happen, who knows most qualified applicants for Scholars are still very unlikely especially if thousands apply) for Scholars. It is just that having some spike (area or two of super high passion and engagement that is academic or artistic beyond the classroom and usually leading to publication, or some state or higher level award. You are well rounded and have leadership positions…like many regular admits with similar, higher, and lower stats than yours. You wouldn’t be the ideal Scholars candidate, but clearly some standard well-rounded people with high stats do get it anyway. It is just much more likely if you had high stats and a spike). You chances of admissions versus an ED1 student are irrelevant as the volume in RD is too high in comparison. No point in comparing the qualifications.

@collegeplz2018

The professor in charge of that research is Dr. Taliaferro-Smith. Her profile describing her breast cancer research in brief with related publications is here:
http://www.biology.emory.edu/first/fellows/past-fellows/taliaferro-smith-latonia.html

https://app.oxford.emory.edu/WebApps/Directory/index.cfm/view/9391

Last year, the students who signed up for Biology 499R worked together on breast cancer research in her lab and completed a poster presentation made to the biology faculty. I think that students in Biology 499R this year will do the same. I’m now a junior and no longer at Oxford College of Emory.

Dr. Baker who’s head of the biology department might know better how Biology 499R works this year and will work in future years.

General Comments: I know my courseload doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is almost (except one AP English class) every AP and honors class offered. I go to a VERY small private school (12 kids in my class). My school has sent grads to UC Berkely, Vanderbilt, and Cornell. Mine will be our 5th graduating class.

@hhootle
Good shot stats wise, however you’ve applied to so many schools that your essays for some of them are probably lacking.

@VANDEMORY1342
Yea, but I worked pretty darn hard on them. I worked especially hard on some of the harder schools that have supplements, including Emory, Georgetown, Haverford, and Tufts. I started pretty early as well. They have also been read, revised, and approved by two sets of college counselors, my parents, and myself. I will say, my Northwestern essay probably could have used some improvement, but that is such a reach that it probably wouldn’t change much. I know I probably should have applied to fewer schools, but this process has been a rather difficult one for me given some anxieties and indecision and such. I would say my Emory essays were some of my best. Very creative and well written. But, who am I to judge how they will be perceived by admissions officers.

@hhootle
Well okay that’s good. Your EC’s are interesting not necessarily eye popping, but certainly above avg. Low reach, possibly High match. It’s RD and they probably received a crap-ton of apps. But you in the 75% for all the schools you applied for so their all at-most Low Reaches.
