Emory RD Class of 2022

I talked to financial aid on Friday morning and she said some students might have it on Friday afternoon and that Emory employees were coming in Saturday/today to work on it. Therefore, I think it is reasonable to expect many to have an answer on Monday.

I’ll just add that many of us parents and students have been very patient waiting on admission results for months, but some need the FA information to decide on whether it is financially feasible and worth visiting the school again before making a final decision. Flights need to be booked weeks in advance for best airfares…, so although a final “informed decision” may not need to be made before May 1, many other arrangements need to be made, from travel to different schools, getting other results…, all while our students juggle the pressure of the final month or two of a rigorous senior semester, AP tests coming up in early May… it’s actually not too much to ask for FA information ASAP. Emory has already said they would provide FA last Friday and no doubt will on Monday. USC released admission decisions today and have promised FA packages by Tuesdsay. We have been patient. Now it’s time for the schools to provide timely information so we can absorb it and have the next few weeks to decide what is best for our families and students.

Is Emory a good school for ibanking? Is it a target school? If yes, which banks interview there?

@helooooo considered a semi-target. You can visit the Emory website and see companies that primarily recruit at Emory.

@hellloooo It’s regarded as a semi-target for most banks. SunTrust, Lazard and many other smaller firms do OCR at Emory.

@ljberkow Oh geez, I would honestly rather avoid discussing anything related to this ibanking craze in hopes that people don’t have that as the first thing on their mind when they go to a school. Explore things for goodness sakes.

@Hellloooooo damn your username is a pain in the *** to type… Yeah, as the other posters said, Emory is a semi-target but it is really what you make of it. Will the OCR be as good as the Ivies/Duke? No - but if you network hard and perform well, the opportunities will come to you since Emory is I’d say a strong semi-target.

@bernie12 just answering the target question. A small minority of undergraduates at GBS wind up with investment banking job, but the opportunities are there.

@ljberkow : Is it a small minority? I thought it was a significant fraction just at GBS, maybe just after consulting or before it (says finance is the top area…however not all of that will be IB? I don’t really know which other finance jobs folks at GBS pursue within finance). Regardless, sometimes “IB” is really just code for a select few investment banks…because apparently not all carry enough signaling/social prestige to be considered relevant despite paying well lol. Sigh…only at elite privates and publics.

@bernie12 https://goizueta.emory.edu/careermanagement/recruit/BBA/statistics/index.html That’s the list of companies hiring for GBS undergraduate program. There are some IBs in there, but it’s not a majority.

Not everyone who goes to GBS is interested in finance or IB careers, so keep it in mind when you see data re: jobs in this area. I’m seriously considering going to GBS and am interested in consulting and marketing- not finance.

@ljberkow
You’re assuming, everyone who didn’t do finance, was doing there second choice. That’s not the case. Most Goizueta students don’t want to do finance. Even though finance has a plurality.

Just got off the phone with the Oxford financial aid department. They said that they were behind and it could be the end of the week before we hear back.

@VANDEMORY1342 could you send me the link to the Vandy CC page? I’m having trouble finding it myself and am curious if anyone’s heard when decisions will be available. Thanks so much!

@VANDEMORY1342 : I never saw @ljberkow make that assumption. I think we are trying to figure out how those financial services jobs are distributed. Now they said that there weren’t many IBs listed among the companies, but again, I usually read and hear of a sort of snobbery for some IBs, so I kind of wonder if those doing IB and finance are really just biased towards certain companies (so the folks that do it are distributed across the few they are interested in/recruit at Emory).

@VANDEMORY1342 I am not assuming anything. Anyone can draw their own assumptions from that link from the GBS site. GBS, even at an undergrad level is stronger for IB than I first thought and that explains the high salaries of Finance majors. Certainly, that career is not for everyone and many Finance majors are just as interested in Investment Management as Investment Banking. Also GBS is strong for consulting and other majors as well. It’s a great school.

I do know that there are tours and open houses at the admitted students days next Wednesday, the following Wednesday, and April 21 (only for RD admits).

edit - looks like Bernie beat me to the punch and I agree that many view IB jobs as the Wall Street positions and it appears that Emory places some with southern boutique companies, but I would be guessing if I thought I could break down IB from investment management / portfolio management positions among Finance majors. I am just happy that GBS grads are doing very well.

I also have to decide between Emory and Tulane. Right now, I’m leaning towards Tulane, but I haven’t visited Emory yet. Going to be a very difficult decision

@lydmatts First congratulations. We visited both schools last year. What are you planning on majoring in and what is important to you? Hopefully, you visit Emory on one of the Admitted Students Days (Spring into Emory). I would think that if you visit one and not the other that you would lean to the one you visited because there is a comfort level. Maybe that will change next month.

Anyone else still without an aid award?

Anyone else receive an email from Emory that listed very selective schools and wants to know what financial aid you’ve received from those schools? Included a link to a form to submit other schools offers to them for review?
