@nickkraut I meant recommendations, the rejection got to me
Has everybody recieved the financial aid award, I didn’t get mine yet. Anyone else?
We are waiting for financial aid also.
@1sttimethrougj
Same thing here! Very disappointed. Especially because when we ran the Net Price Calculator, it was drastically different. Tired of getting my hopes up…Good luck to your son!
My son chose Oxford over Tulane (with merit aid) last year. The sciences at Oxford have been very strong, as expected. What has been a surprise though is how much he has enjoyed the humanities and English classes. He is loving his writing courses and has found a professor to mentor him. He has also been able to play his sport at Oxford. Socially he has a great group of friends but this is probably the one area of Oxford that could have been better but my son has never expressed any regret over his choice.
We are also waiting for financial aid to show up in Opus…
In the past, students invited to scholars but didnt get it got about a 15K merit award from Emory. Is that still true?
@Toeupwms
If it was dramatically different, you might have made a mistake on your CSS. Give them a call.
I got in but it’s hard to be excited about it bc I haven’t gotten merit at any of the merit awarding colleges so it looks like I’ll Be headed to the local state school with a scholarship anyway since our EFC is full pay everywhere. It’s not that I don’t want to go to the state school but it feels like all those applications were for nothing and I can’t even be happy about acceptances now haha
Last night I still hadn’t received my financial aid award. Just checked it now and still not there yet. Should I be worried?
I am in the same boat. I was only accepted to Oxford if that means anything…
Financial aid office isnt open today, so I guess we’ll have to wait till monday…
@bernie12
Was looking through your posts regarding getting FA re-evaluated. Do you think it would be appropriate for me or my parents to contact FA on Monday since their offer and the NPC is 20k difference? I do not qualify for need based, but kinda had my hopes up and decided to apply after running the NPC and making a visit. The other offers were very very close to the NPC, so I’m just a little confused here. I would like to attend Oxford.
@Toeupwms
The CSS profile can drastically increase your EFC if your parents have equity in their home and or a business. We learned this through University of Richmond, the first CSS profile school my D was accepted to. Our EFC nearly doubled from what showed on FAFSA. My D was waitlisted at Emory, which is for the best because they are a CSS profile school. In hindsight, if I had known the implications of the CSS profile, we would probably have skipped applying to those schools. We just aren’t willing to take out a home equity loan for education.
@wineindoubt
Thank you! Now it makes sense!!! Didn’t realize it wasn’t the same as FAFSA! Wish I had known that too. Like you, my parents are not willing to mortgage their house that they have worked so hard for and I can’t expect them to do that. They thought they did everything right by saving and doing the prepaid instate program, I just don’t want to stay in state. But looks like I will either be at our State uni ir CC! So so disappointing!!!
Just make sure they didn’t include assets like 401(k) in their assets. That can be the difference between getting aid and not. The forms aren’t clear and I can see people making the mistake of including it.
As @ljberkow stated, you should check with the financial aid office to try to raise your need based aid. When we did back in the day, I learned that they had included 401K assets in their determination, which they weren’t supposed to do. That was because an error on our part in including those in assets; retirement assets aren’t to be counted.
Further, we were able to make the case that other schools were offering more money and to use that as leverage in negotiating for more.
In the end, we were able to raise substantially the amount received from the financial aid office. It took 3 rounds of back and forth however.
Regarding merit aid, it probably wouldn’t hurt to ask although I suspect they’re more likely to reconsider if you convince them that Emory’s your first choice.
Is there any chance that financial aid will come out before Monday even though the office is closed?
No update on financial aid today either.
Please guys, 4-5 thousand people were accepted the other day, including the 4,500 other Emory students that need fin aid re-evaluation. Please be patient. You have until May 1st to decide which school is for you, you will surely have all the information you need to make an informed decision by then.
