Guess Emory sent that to everyone! We received it too, along with the correction this morning.
The sad news is that I did not even get the email.
is emory/oxford really worth it if premed as it comes out to 69k a yr (middle class)
@donkeyKongGenius
What defines Middle Class? $250,000+?
If not then I would say no,…however, I would appeal the financial aid decision before you decline the offer completely. Where else did you get into, maybe you can use that as leverage? Is this Oxford or Emory College?
Yeah around that 250 range… Affording it is not the problem, I just want a good value and it’s for both schools
I got into BU kilachand, UCLA, UT, few others, and full ride at UTD, no aid at the first 3
Tbh my family (like other folks here) is at that uncomfortable income since no need based aid but not wealthy either
Hi! I was accepted into Oxford-Emory but waitlisted for Emory. I’ve been watching this thread for some days as I have not received my financial aid package yet. I had to verify my financial aid info, but now I am on the edge of my seat for my package.
Does anyone know when I’ll receive my aid package since everyone else got theirs already? I anticipated Monday since people brought up the other 4000 people who needed to verify and the office being behind and all.
Also, do you think my financial aid packaged will be reduced because I met the initial financial aid deadline but only verified it when decisions came out? I’m really hoping it doesn’t because I’m eligible for a lot of money like upwards of $60K - full, and I’m scared I may not get that and don’t want my hopes to be let down. If my package is an upwards of $60K, I actually would matriculate to Oxford-Emory.
Finally, should I try e-mailing them? I don’t want to rush them if they’re busy; also don’t want to be pushy since it is my fault for not verifying sooner… I have some hope because of the decisions email where I had until April 6th to complete aid requirements if I didn’t receive a package on March 23 like everyone else…
Thank you
@donkyKongGenius
Well Yea, that’s not midlle class, but full pay is still a strain at that income. I would ask for more at least $20,000. But Emory seems to be your best option out of the schools you got into.
@VANDEMORY1342
How do you go about asking for more aid? Just following @donkeyKongGenius post, kinda in the same position with the aid & finances between Emory-Oxford & Tulane.
Yeah Ill try calling them tmrw to see if i can get any aid… also just curious on why emory is my best option
UCLA would save you about $8K a year. That might be a better option if you don’t want to tack on an extra $32K of student debt.
Yeah that’s true… Though I’m prob going to UTD cuz full ride
Call your financial aid advisor… that’s what I’m going to do… you can find their number and name on your OPUS portal when you click “View my financial aid”
I saw that there is a Special Circumstance Appeal Form to be filled out by those who seek adjustment of their fin aid. Did you all fill that out or did you just call the fin aid office without it?
how good is emory’s premed? I’m nervous it’ll be to hard uGH
Also I need reasons to love it haha, what do you guys love about Emory? I’ve only heard that students diss Emory for fun…not much school spirit, and people are cutthroat
@culaccino I love how Emory has something for everyone. If you’re into partying, there’s a Greek scene. If you’re not, Greek life does not rule the social scene so you aren’t left out. You have Atlanta to explore. IMO people here are actually very collaborative. I’m sure you can find some cutthroat people but I haven’t really met any in my experience here. I am kind of disappointed that Emory is lacking in the school spirit department but it is shown in quirky ways (through Dooley).
Emory needs D1 sports! At least a D1AA basketball team! This lack of spirit has existed since forever at Emory- yes there are those who say we don’t need them but the yeas far outweigh the nays!
Emory definitely has the money and resources to go D1 - and I would love for that to happen - but I don’t think it will because of Emory’s emphasis on academics.
There is no such thing as Division 1AA basketball. That’s a football concept. You are either D1 or D2.
Tulane has D1 ball and it and draws just 1,700 in attendance a game. You have to wonder even how many of those are students from opposing schools making it part of a New Orleans weekend.
I know it is a long time ago, but I always appreciated that Emory was big into intramurals and student participation in sports. Used to enjoy going to pro sports as well. To each his own I suppose, but I don’t understand why someone who is into the rah rah spirit thing would go to Emory in the first place. I understand that more people would be for D1 basketball than against it, but that doesn’t mean it makes sense either.
imma just go watch the Georgia tech games since theyre basically neighbors lol
@College4real : It doesn’t NEED it, but plenty of people WANT it (of course people’s desires are not always sensible or benign, and nor do they always result in benefits, at least not without trade offs) it needs more interesting students who can maybe find the time to create interesting traditions even in absence of D-1 or an overly dominant Greek scene. This is what make places like Chicago and JHU interesting regardless of them lacking most (if not all) D-1 sports (and not having Greek and sports centered pride) and being very academically intense. Also, sports oriented rah rah is de-emphasized at many Ivies (such as Harvard) in favor of world class and well put together EC programs that make a big mark on campus culture and get recognition from the outside. When people claim that they “need” D-1 whatever to feel a certain way, it kind of suggests they are not willing to create a fun atmosphere, they want someone or something else to provide it. At such a school, attendance even if D-1 will probably be low and the culture will change in losing seasons or any time outside of game day. Emory students, I find just need to learn how to have fun and have an open mind as to what it is and can be. It need not be the same and center around the same things as American Pie or other media depictions say it does. I need not mention the problems with recruiting and the concept of the “student-athlete”(and how it manifests itself at many schools, even elites…Chapel Hill anyone?) which creates all types of ethical and moral dilemmas and can impact the academic environment.
@TheTennisNinja : Does it really? ECAS and GBS aren’t rich at all. Most of the endowment of the university is med. school, and Emory allied health units. The resources you speak of would have to go towards renovation of Woodpec, or addition of a completely new facility, AND a new facility to host the audience, etc. It would be quite costly and probably hinder other initiatives and things they need to deal with in key units that are already on edge in terms of resources. If you have not always had D-1, you really need your house in order to enter it. Hell, some places have to strain just to switch conferences because of the standards NCAA sets.
