HI @ eastcoast101 Are you sure that they calculate GPA without freshman 9th grade grades? That would really be great for us personally. Heard california schools do that too ? Any other colleges ignore freshman grades? We went for information session but no mention of how they calculate GPA
@pearl0607 yes Emory recalculates GPA without freshman year grades. We were told this by the director of admissions as welll as my son’s local rep.
Is the Emory scholars a full ride?
@CollegeAhead
Some scholars receive full rides, most don’t
So how much is it generally?
I am an Emory Scholars finalist! Would any other finalists be willing to connect through a group chat or something so we can get to know each other before finalist week? Pm me if you’d want an invite
@pearl0607 yes the recalculate GPA without freshman grades. We heard this both from an information session near our home and through admissions during a campus visit. However, that is not the same thing as ignoring them.
Quick question: if the on-line financial aid calculator tells you that you are eligible for a certain amount of aid, does any scholarship that you received from the university (When applying for the Scholars program, not a finalist, though) get subtracted from that aid amount?
If the on-line calculator says we would get 30K in financial aid, and if I was then to get awarded $10k scholarship after applying to the Scholars programs (not a finalist), does that $10k count towards the $30k in aid they said they would award, or is it in addition to the $30K in Fin aid award? These are random $ numbers for the sake of an example how things work.
@OutaState
Yes
@hinande I’m not sure that all 100 invitees will be getting scholarship but I think the majority will. Last year everyone who I’ve kept in touch with got very generous scholarship. Many (myself included) got a full ride. As @ljberkow mentioned, a number of finalists who receive scholarship will choose other schools. Good luck to your daughter!
@outastate Emory meets 100% of demonstrated need. If your need is $30k and you receive a 10k scholarship your need is reduced to 20k. They aren’t going to stack merit and financial aid.
Does anyone have insight into whether those admitted with a $20k merit scholarship would also be eligible to receive an additional scholarship (i.e, music) that could be added to the initial merit scholarship? Or does the merit scholarship take you out of the running for other scholarships?
Any Goizueta Business School scholar finalists? Does anyone know how many there are?
The scholar finalists stay with current students on campus Monday-Friday.
100 students are invited, and it is true that only some of them get the full ride (those students only have to pay for books.) But everyone who comes to emory for the interview week is guaranteed at least a partial scholarship (but they won’t be a part of the scholars program.)
I read an article on The Emory Wheel from 2018 that explained how Emory now takes up to 12 credit hours of AP credits compared to 24 credit hours (which is unfortunate for incoming students like me). Just to confirm, each test with a score of 4 or 5 counts as 3 credit hours right? And if I have more than four AP tests that I can translate into credit hours, should I get credit hours for the hardest/less interesting classes?
Not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask questions like these but would definitely appreciate any responses!
@ryandryu the AP policy is listed on Emory’s website. Some AP’s require a 5 to get credit.
@ryandryu in addition to what collegemom9 said above, it’s up to you how to use them–some use them to place into a higher level of math, for example. And not all APs are accepted. For example, you cannot get credit for AP statistics. However, an AP stat score of 5 is acceptable for fulfilling the prerequisite for acceptance into Goizueta. Also they will only accept one AP English score–either lit or lang, but not both. You should review the website carefully to see what tests they will accept, and what score is needed.
Some classes are 3 credits, some are 4. Again, check the school website.
Even though my child had a 5 on an AP English test they chose to enroll in a freshman English class anyway, to build confidence in college writing. Just enrolled in a higher level class.
Emory changed its AP credits policy effective for the Class of 2022. They limited the number of AP credits and changed some minimum scores to get credits from 4s to 5s.
Here is a summary of the changes:
Old - Up to 24 AP credits
New - Up to 12 AP Credits
Changes to exam score credits:
Emory will no longer accept scores of 4 for AP Art History; AP Government and Politics: Comparative and United States (U.S.); AP European History; AP U.S. History; AP World History; and AP Psychology. Students must receive a score of 5 on the aforementioned AP tests to receive credit.
The thought by some was that Emory was “out of step with peer institutions,” such as Vanderbilt University (Tenn.), Duke University (N.C.) and Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.), which only accept higher test scores and transferred fewer credit hours in comparison to Emory’s.
There are arguments on both sides. Goizueta still makes it doable to enter enroll early in spring of sophomore year (as opposed to waiting until junior year) if students can get 9 or 12 AP credits.
There may have been some complaints about fairness in that certain public schools have this full AP environment and private schools might not offer AP, but tougher courses or some publics limit AP.
@eastcoast101 Do you know for sure that the Stats score needs to be a 5 for the Goiuzetta pre-req? It just says that AP Stats credit can be used online but doesn’t list a score. My son will take the test in May and obviously hopes to use it.
