My daughter was accepted to Emory and Oxford. She applied by the Nov 15th deadline, but did not get scholars or merit aid early. Any chance she could still get merit or is it just need based aid that will be coming out?
@katnissjul I really hope you enjoy your visit to Rochester and I do feel for people who really want to go to Emory who aren’t admitted. It’s a great school and you really never know with fit. Most probably don’t figure that out until November of their freshman year.
Calm down everyone, everyone’s opinion is to be respected!
Back to Emory, are there any questions about majors, research, academics in general?
@DSOF20192023 What makes Oxford special is that the teachers are very approachable and have all their focus on the freshmen + sophomores. I know a few people who are doing bio research during the school year alongside a professor but you have to ask first.
Anyone get FA email yet?
@Yssej3 I understand your frustration as well. My daughter was also rejected with great grades and an amazing ACT(34) score (Emory’s loss). But we went into this process knowing that even if a school is a fit on paper there is no guarantee of acceptance. The other side of the coin as you alluded to is even if your child is accepted, can they afford the crazy prices the schools are demanding. Our goal was to find a school that was attainable, affordable and where she felt welcomed. Some of the schools she applied to were quite a bit under the radar in college ranking. In the end we now have 3 great choices and even though the Emory decision was not what she would have liked, she is not undone because she still has very good options. It’s important for the parents to let your kids know that it is more important for them to focus on what they do with their time in college than which college they end up going to.

@Momto2girls I never said your daughter didn’t deserve to be a Emory and I don’t think it. I hope you didn’t mean to call me entitled. I was only expressing frustration about factors one cannot choose, change, or control affecting the selection process.
@salster : Emory does not accept folks into majors unless you were a GBS Scholar finalist which auto-admits finalsts to the b-school which normally admits students for matriculation as a junior at Emory. If an ECAS admit, you do what the heck you want! Free for all. Does not matter what you claimed an interest in on the application (note, you did not “apply” to a major, by checking any box, you merely expressed interest in it. “Applying” implies a commitment to it and there is absolutely no commitment to majors involved. They know many people’s majors and interest will change)
@DSOF20192023 : Your daughter doesn’t really have to wait for summer research and may be able to at least do some serious course based research where she works in a lab (for credit) and is mentored by the Oxford faculty who runs the course. Those experiences are more plentiful at Oxford because it is smaller and they can lead to publication (scientific or educational/pedagogy). One such example is this:https://app.oxford.emory.edu/WebApps/Directories/EResources/Syllabi/2018-Fall/BIO%20340R%20Syllabus-FALL%202018_LTS.pdf
If she has a bio credit and enrolls in biol 142, she can apparently take it, or perhaps she can alert that instructor that she has prior experience.
For a more independent research experience, summer is ideal. Also, don’t feel pressured to have your daughter graduate in a single year. Oxford’s STEM curriculum is really strong because of the small size and if she is ready for a certain style of rigor, it may be better to complete some STEM courses there over a two year period instead of quickly transitioning to ECAS for research opps (ECAS can have similar style of rigor IF you choose the right instructors). Note that some faculty (Oxford) there do actually do some undergraduate driven research even outside of a course based experience.
anyone get the opportunity award yet? or has that not been done?
