Emory University / Oxford College Class of 2023 Thread

@nonomom yeah but I’m at the main campus now.

@ljberkow Unfortunately, I cant afford Tulane so my only options are Rochester and Rutgers. Really just anticipating the rest of my RD decisions. I don’t know if Rochester really is a great match for me, but I’m touring during spring break and trying to convince myself that I’ll like it there. This sucks, though. I would have been much happier at Emory. This concept of “fit” is stupid.

@StraightOuttaTX I’m touring Roch over spring break and trying to convince myself that I’ll be happy going there. I’m not a big fan of the city or the cold but I’ve heard great things about the undergrad research opportunities, so maybe I’ll like it… But I can’t help but feel like I would be happier at Emory. Maybe I’ll see you next year at Rochester (but also crossing my fingers that ONE SINGLE reach school admits me… we will see, I guess…)

My D got in! Does anyone know how to check on financial aid?

Stats of admitted students to Class of 2023 is beyond impressive. It is getting harder and harder to gain admittance to Emory. This southern university no longer a safety school for ivy bound kids & it has a robust & well-funded endowment to back that up.

@Momto2girls They will post FA on OPUS. You’ll get an email that shows your package as well. For ED it was posted by noon the day after decisions.

@Yssej3, my D was accepted to Emory. She has a 33 ACT and 3.8 unweighted (her school does not weight) at a very rigorous private school. She has some “hooks” that I’m not disclosing here. OTOH her best friend, whose mom is a legacy (2 grad degrees from Emory) and has a higher ACT than my D and I believe a higher GPA, was rejected. My D had a fabulous essay and I believe her recommendations were really stellar. She also has unusual extracurriculars – has worked on political campaigns for several years, and was a paid staffer on one. FYI she was waitlisted at Davidson yesterday too. She has been accepted to UMN (honors), Grinnell, Wellesley, Emory. Rejected by WashU and Colby. Waiting to hear (hopefully tomorrow) from Barnard and Smith.

None of this is guaranteed. I feel bad for any kid who doesn’t get in to their “dream school” but honestly, my kid could not even apply to several of her dream schools because they don’t pay full need and without that it’s just not possible for her. She knew not to fall in love with any school because her decision would have to be financially driven. OTOH she did not apply anywhere she didn’t think she could be happy. Like you, we could not apply ED anywhere.

I think we should all keep in mind the wise title of a recent book about this whole admissions game: Where you go is not who you’ll be.

Thanks, @collegemom9

my D got admitted into Oxford with ACT 36, 4.3W (school does not give UW), 11 APs (6 more this year), very rigorous sci/tech public school, many medical ECs including neuro research.

Thanks Emory.

My D is doing neuro research from last one year and ready to publish two papers. Can she get enough opportunities at Oxford to continue her research? If not, then can we request for Atlanta campus? Any feedback on this regard will be appreciated.

@DSOF20192023 yes it is possible. Over the summer is the best time. As summer classes are only at the College so D can get schedule opportunities and build relationships there over the summer, so the transition is easier in her third year transfer to Emory. Also D seems smart enough to finish Oxford in one year as well, so that is also an option.

thanks @emorynavy. So we need to wait until summer for doing any research? Ideal thing would be doing it along with studies during freshman/sophomore years.

My question then is what research can be done in freshman/sophomore years in Oxford?

Rejected 3.9 and 4.6 waited. 33 ACT. 6 honor societies with leadership including founding and president. Started a reading program…It is a bummer, but she will try for med schoool.

Momto2girls’ post points out what really frustrates me about the selection process. “Hooks”! A student can work just hard, get better grades, earn higher test scores, and she can still be rejected because of factors no one has the power to choose or control.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted! I think the takeaway here, as others have said, is that Emory is simply not as stats driven as other schools. If they were, they could simply post cut-offs like a school like McGill does. Your kids all have impressive stats, ECs, etc, otherwise they wouldn’t have applied. Emory (and any elite school) simply can’t accept all that apply. I’m sure they could fill their entire freshman class with kids with 36 ACTs, 10 APs, etc. If they accepted all kids with 36 ACTs, they could just post that and be done, reject everyone with ACT below 36. Emory, and other schools, are looking for “something else.” They are looking to build a community, much more than other schools, I think. That means some kids with perfect stats will be rejected in favor of kids with slightly lower stats but other things going for them. Emory has a substantial international population, for example. They accept a lot of students through QuestBridge. If you offer athletics, you have an obligation to field a team. A rejection or a waitlist is truly not a reflection of your student, it is much more a reflection of the process. Meanwhile, I’m sure everyone who did not get in will get in at another fabulous school and will be able to put this entire process behind them once they set foot on their campus of choice in the fall.

Rejected

35 ACT, 96 UW, 103 W

6 APs (all 5s), 7 more this year

Science Olympiad Captain, Newspaper Editor, lots of research awards…

I’m Asian, high-income and from NY

Confused about why I was rejected, my gc is saying it’s because they’re trying to protect their yield seems to have happened to many on this site

I can’t believe I actually got in!! Was too scared to check last night but I just got an email congratulating me and I accidentally opened it lol ? International student, 34 ACT, ~94 UW GPA, some pretty good ECs! But also, how do we know which major we got accepted to? Is it just the one we applied to?

@vanillapudding23 with so many kids applying from NYC, Westchester, and Long Island, NY competition is intense. I’m assuming they got lots of apps from kids like you and just had to make some cuts. Some yield protection too.

@2023kid, I’m not sure what you are saying. My daughter is totally qualified to be at Emory and I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it sounds as if you have a case of sour grapes. I hope you don’t convey this entitled attitude to your student.

Where does the misinformation come from that RD gets more aid than ED? It’s formula based?

There is also no secret formula for admission. That after school job to support a family has as much value as extra curricular activities. It’s why chancing for Emory is a waste of time for the RD round. Emory does not look to protect yield. There are schools that do that and Emory is not one of them.

My daughter was not accepted. 31 ACT, 4.3 weighted GPA, private school. It was a longshot but proud of her for putting herself out there. At least now we know!

Thanks, @eastcoast101, for your words of wisdom. Sometimes when colleges talk about holistic admissions, it’s hard to know if they are being honest with us; some are, some aren’t.
