******EMORY UNIVERSITY RD 2019 thread*****

kvonnegut: So far as I’m aware, that event was specifically for blacks and hispanics that were admitted.

@Halicarnassus‌ ok cool cause I’m neither. Where did you hear that info?

I think it says if you just google “Essence of Emory” that it’s only for certain minorities, so don’t worry!

http://www.emory.edu/admission/admission/decisions/essence_invite.pdf

It makes me wonder: What if there was a white and, say, Asian-only event? Ha. You’d never hear the end of it.

^ that’d be all the rest of the students at Emory, pretty much. A rather large gathering.

0.2% American Indian/Alaskan Native
25.9% Asian
10.9% Black/African-American
7.3% Hispanic/Latino
3.3% Multi-race (not Hispanic/Latino)
0.0% Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander
47.7% White
4.8% Unknown

@OHMomof2‌ ^not really. Not hosted overnight. Not put up for 3 nights, eating, attending classes, and getting to know the university. All for just $50 and transportation paid for if need demonstrated. Sorry. A poor, smart kid of other background from Hoboken may not have that same opportunity unless a Scholar Finalist. Emory is not alone. Vandy has Mosaic, which a friend’s D attended, and while she’s lively, she’s not a rock star, and she has classmates above her in school who want to visit campus that way,but they don’t qualify under Mosaic. Many have other similar programs. It’s a fine line

Amherst has a similar program based on race and/or income.

It seems Emory is trying to attract and enroll more URM students and this is how they’re trying to do it. Also, they don’t pay for it unless the student qualifies for FA (according to the PDF posted a few posts back).

Due to all the documents we have to send in, colleges can verify the birthplace of applicants and their parents, etc. so I’ve always wondered why we have the option of choosing “Unknown”…like there was some way to hide our race/ethnicity?

My FA used to say Oxford and now it says Emory…I applied to both. Is this a good sign???

P.S. What time do decisions come out I don’t have access to the email right now

Decisions come out 6pm Thursday!

@victorose5‌ I’m not sure, but I am also curious with what this FA stuff might or might not indicate. I applied to both, and my FA has said Emory University the entire time (at least I’m pretty sure…). Not to make you panic, but it sounds more logical for it to be a good sign if it changes from Emory University to Oxford? I’m just speculating…it’s really odd that we both applied to both but yours said Oxford first…
Can anyone who has been accepted in the past tell us poor, panicking applicants anything?

Also it might not even mean anything at all. I called Oxford College asking if they had access to the same application file as Emory College does and Oxford College said yes, so it could simply mean that your financial aid was processed by Oxford College first and then is being listed officially as Emory University now? As weird as it is I honestly don’t think we should stress about it too much.

in the long run, both my kids want a diverse population at their college/school/life. It is what they have grown up around, and where they are most comfortable. Intellectual diversity is equally important to each of them, which is why they both decided to NOT attend our area magnet gifted school, and opted gifted programming at the larger high school in our town. No matter what program is put in place, it will step on someone’s toes. And the flip side I have read about Mosaic (Vandy) is that some believe it gives an unrealistic feel to attendees of what the campus culture actually is. So…. that said: I just wish Emory also offered an overnight option for other students interested, like Wash U does, for example, who actually pays for some admitted students travel, regardless of ethnicity, or Yale, Stanford, Dartmouth, many others do, regardless of demographics.

Tomorrow is the day of reckoning, ladies and gentlemen. Best of luck to you all.

Yup, good luck to everyone

Does anyone know if Emory has had a history of decisions being released early or not?

@victorose5 The same has happened to me. I don’t know if it means anything. Maybe as the documents were processed for each school the box displayed something different?

Good luck guys! Today’s the day!
