Hey friends,
I’ve been working on my CSS profile for quite some time now, and unfortunately even though my parents tried hard they couldn’t get their hands on their 2015 tax papers/employers’ statements. They’re due March 31st, which is way beyond all of my schools’ deadlines.
What do I do?
Should I simply fill in the 2014 details and make a note about it in the comments section at the end of the profile?
Your parents should have end of 2015 year income information you can use. You can use this to complete your FAFSA and Prfile using estimates…best estimates…for the 2015 tax year.
Are they self employed? Why is it taking until 3/31 to get the necessary documentation to complete their taxes…or is that just the date when they have an appointment to get them done?
Are you a U.S. or international student? If you are a U.S. student, “employers’ statements” (W-2 or 1099 forms) need to be made available by the employer no later than the end of this month. If you are an international student or for some reason won’t have the forms you need in time to file CSS, I would estimate the 2015 income and tax figures instead of using 2014 information. Your parents should know how much they earned in 2015 and should be able to at least estimate what their 2015 tax burden is.
Hey, don’t know why I forgot to mention this crucial detail - yes, I am an international student.
The thing is, going over my parents’ previous yearly documents, numbers don’t really change anyway. So I figured putting in the most recent amounts would make sense.
I will, of course, point out that fact in the special circumstances part.
What do you think?
If your numbers from 2014 are really the same…you can use those as your 2015 estimates.
Make sure you adhere to yoir colleges deadlines for financial aid applications.
@thumper1 Yes! definitely. Thanks!
