Engineering Likely Letter Class of 2019

If you guys click on the link with more info about the open house day it explicitly says “FOR INVITED GUESTS ONLY” and “The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) is hosting its annual Engineering Open House for Fall 2015 top applicants.” If this email doesn’t mean we are in, then I don’t know what to think!

Yes  I got it too! I applied for computer science! I hope this means that we’re in…I don’t want to get my hopes up for nothing. But I’m glad that this is definitely a good sign. I’m pretty sure also those who didn’t get it aren’t automatically rejected either

I got one on friday evening! For CS and engineering. Super pumped.

Likely letters only sent to 25% engineering admits. Engineering only (which includes CS). Getting one means you are in. They are holistic, so it isn’t top 25%, it means you have something they like, not necessarily the top scores. The essay may have caught their attention. That is what admissions said at open house. There are still many that will get in that did not receive the letter. They just try to get the attention of some applicants before the other UCs come out. The letters were later than usual, typically they come out two full weeks before decisions. Have been through this before and now, this is how it works.

Letters come out at all at once, they are done. Decisions the 20th as stated on the UCLA portal.

@CADREAMIN‌ thanks for the info!

Here are my stats:

Received likely letter (so I’m assuming I’m admitted.
Computer Science and Engineering
UW GPA: 4.0
UC GPA: 4.67
SAT: 2080 (thought this was gonna kill my chances tbh)
SAT breakdown: 690 CR, 700 M, 690 W
SAT II: 760 Math Level 2, 740 Physics
10 APs by the end of senior year
-5’s on Physics B, Calculus AB, US History, and Environmental Science
-4’s on English Lang and World History
-Currently taking AP Stats, AP Bio, AP Lit, and AP US Gov.
-Took calculus 2 at a community college 1st semester of senior year (my school doesn’t have Calc BC)

Extra curriculars:
-FIRST Robotics Competition team co-founder and co-president (2 years)
-Academic Team, Varsity starter this year (3 years)
-Piano lessons (10 years)
-NHS secretary and member (2 years)
-JV lacrosse (2 years- freshman and sophomore. Tbh I was going to put CSF instead but my parents said adding a sport makes me look more well rounded lol)

Awards:
-NCWIT Aspirations in Computing National Runner-Up (2014) and San Diego Regional Winner (2014 and 2015)
-Gordon Scholars Award (goes to top final project in each class at COSMOS)
-AP Scholar with Distinction
-Cardinal Scholar (goes to people with over a 4.0 weighted cumulative GPA at my high school. Not very hard to get, but only 10% of the senior class receives it)

Essays:

  1. Being Canadian but never living there, born in Singapore and raised in Cali for most of my life. Talked about conflicted feelings towards my nationality but how that has allowed me to not be afraid to go to a foreign country to pursue my dream of becoming an engineer.
  2. talked about how attending COSMOS inspired me to start my robotics team. Also talked about how my team did really well in competition and went to Nationals in St Louis as a 1st year team.

Other info:
-I attended COSMOS (2013) at UCSD and Academic Connections (2014) at UCSD during the summer and enrolled in computer science/robotics courses
-Gender: Female
-Ethnicity: White
-State: California
-Colleges:
UCSD and Rose Hulman Institute of Technology (accepted)
Cal Poly SLO (waitlisted)
MIT (rejected)
Waiting on UCSB, Berkeley, Stanford (lol), and Stevens Institute of Technology

Anyways, I just wanted to show that SAT scores aren’t everything! my scores are waaaaay low for HSSEAS Computer science and engineering, but somehow I got the likely letter!

Here are the UCLA engineering stats by major btw:

@appleface47 Very impressive. The only thing I had “better” than you was my sat score lol. Everything else on the app was pretty much just equal. In fact, your weighted GPA is higher haha. Test scores aren’t everything!

@IAmTheGOAT‌ thank you! Driving myself crazy these past four years is finally paying off haha. Did you apply for Compter Science and Engineering too?

@appleface47 Yes I did! I’m still ecstatic after a few days lol

@IAmTheGOAT‌ yay congrats! I am too, I keep reading the email haha. I don’t think it will really hit me until my portal is updated though

I got it 2 days ago for Civil Engineering! I’m out of state and it would be a dream to get in so I don’t want to get my hopes up yet either

@appleface47

They love to take on more female as only 22.4% of undergraduates are women.

@StevenToCollege‌ affirmative action is illegal in public California schools. Not sure how strictly that rule is followed, but I don’t think having two X chromosomes is the only reason I got the letter

@appleface47

Of course, your other parts of stats and ECs are great.
There’s definitely no question about it.

I saw that you also got into Rose Hulman.
My son was accepted there as well.
Would you choose it over UCLA?

@StevenToCollege‌ yeah, I want to stay in California!

Congrats to those that got likely letters! (See post 43 if you still have questions.) Just so you know, from experience I can tell you that even though it means you are in, until you see that message on your portal, there is this doubt, and that is ok and totally normal! So enjoy this week feeling you are in (which you are) but know seeing that message will still be an amazing moment, even if just a confirmation of what you already believe to be true! This is an exciting time in life for you - enjoy and good luck to all this week, hope all your dreams come true!

@CADREAMIN‌ Thanks for the post! I’m sure it made a lot of us feel better, including myself. But just a question, in post #43, you said that at the open house they straight out said that if you get the email, then you are in? Just making sure.

@CADREAMIN‌ ^ i second this above post. Your words are very comforting and the one about the doubt hits it exactly. If you could provide just a bit more confirmation that would be fantastic! You were there at this open house? And this is true for every year?

If I didn’t get a likely letter are my chances fairly low?

Stats: 4.42 W GPA, 3.92 UW, 2320 SAT (800 M, 720 CR, 800 W), 800 M II, published research/couple of national/international awards

Kinda depressed lol
