Hello, so as most of you know if you got a 720 or higher on the writing 1 on the SAT Reasoning test, you can take the english comp 3 proficiency exam and pass out of english comp 3. My question is, how common is it to pass out of it/how hard is it to pass out of it? I consider myself a decent writer, not too great but definately not bad. I got a 750 on my sat writing and like a 9 on the essay i believe.

I was told by Writing Programs that the proficiency exam is the most difficult way to pass out of English Comp 3. But the chance of hopping over a class and moving on to Writing II was enticing, so I went ahead and took it and passed it. My final (and highest) SAT writing score was 790, and my essays received an 11 or 12 each time I took the exam. If I recall correctly, I think that about a fifth to a third of all who take the exam end up passing out of English Comp 3, numbers which are not too terrible.

The exam is almost exactly the same as the entry level writing exam administered to many incoming freshman. In fact, the only difference between the two is that you don’t pay for the proficiency exam and it is graded locally by two reviewers with a higher threshold for passing.

It does take awhile, however, to grade the exam. So, unless you consult with Writing Programs, you probably will not receive a score for an exam taken in January in time to make enrollment changes for the upcoming quarter. As such, you may want to postpone your decision to enroll English Comp 3 until you know if you’ve passed out of it or not.
