English is not my mother tongue: TOEFL required?

I speak fluent English and go to an English-speaking school in Canada. However, my primary language is not English.

Do I still need to take the TOEFL for college admissions in the US?

If it helps, I am a Canadian citizen now and my SAT score is over 2000 (I heard there's a minimum verbal/writing section score in order to waive the TOEFL)?

Thanks a lot!

How many years have you been in an English speaking country? With a SAT score over 2000, I don’t think you have to take it, but I would also check with the individual colleges just to make sure. (My first language is certainly not English, but it never crossed my mind during college admissions that there would be any need for me to take the TOEFL exam.)

Some colleges will waive the TOEFL if you get a certain score (usually in the 500s). Like xrCalico23 said, check each individual college.

If you have to take it, for whatever reason, I’m sure you would dominate it, no sweat.

yeah, I think with some colleges, they only require you to take it if you cannot speak English and/or got a really low mark on the verbal and critical reading sections… but I will check each school’s website, though I’ve tried that for some sites already and there doesn’t seem to be much information. Does anyone know if top tier schools & Ivies require TOEFL in a case like mine? Much thanks

hey, i was international applicant last year, and I had my high school counselor write to them that I had attended an english medium school throughout n i was fluent and all. I applied to 14 colleges and didnt take the toefl, they all waived it. so ask the counselor to write to them.

also, i had applied to brown, and they said if u had a critical reading sat score over 600, u didnt need toefl, so i’ll say, no, u dont have to take it, just have the counselor write to em.
however, those with me who applied and took it, didnt study for it or anything, and they got EXTREMELY high scores, so if the case is so, don’t fear it’ll take a solid prep to ace it.

that was very, very helpful! I will talk to my guidance counselor and see what needs to be done, and if a letter needs to be written. My CR section on the SAT was over 600, so that’s good. No need for TOEFL for Brown at least. Does anyone know the requirements for other ivies/top tiers?

Brown @ 600 seems awfully high. I think either Columbia or Princeton had theirs in the mid-500s.

Hey guys, I’ve compiled a list of Ivies and other top schools and their TOEFL requirements in another thread:

Please feel free to add on and if you do so, please indicate the date that you got the information off of the website. Thank you and hope that the thread helps.
